Potentially big news regarding the upcoming, looooong-awaited Star Trek sequel comes straight from the mouth of one of the film's actors: The villain has been unveiled! Maybe. (Which means a serious spoiler alert for those would like to be surprised when Star Trek 2 hits theaters next May.)
Karl Urban, who will reprise his role as Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in the summer 2013 follow-up, seemed to accidentally reveal a major tidbit during an interview with SFX about the September Dredd reboot. Asked about what it will be like to soon work with veteran British actor/owner of the best name in showbiz Benedict Cumberbatch (who was cast in January as the villain), Urban responded, "He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary." Um, oops!
It was long thought and assumed that the Enterprise villain in the J.J. Abrams-directed sci-fi sequel would be Khan, the infamous antagonist throughout much of Star Trek's TV and film history. But Urban's inadvertent reveal seems to suggest that Mitchell — who first appeared on a very early episode of the Star Trek series and was ultimately killed by old friend-turned-enemy James T. Kirk (played, of course, by William Shatner on the small screen and Chris Pine in the 2009 film) — will be the chief baddie.
So, was Urban really tired at the end of a long day of junkets, or is this potentially something of a buzz-creating diversion planted by Paramount and Co.? Time will tell! To be continued ...
