Anthony MackieThe center of this generation's Marvel universe is The Avengers. Despite having come after such films as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, the forthcoming existence of The Avengers was planted along the way in each of the preceding movies. As such, the films of the individual heroes retroactively took on the identity of being Avengers offshoots — from The Avengers came Iron Man, Thor and the like. But the worlds of each of the individual films are grand enough to sprout their own offshoots, plausibly with supporting characters introduced therein. One example could come attached to Falcon, a superhero who is set to be introduced to movie audiences in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Anthony Mackie is in talks to take on this role. While at this point Mackie will only be a supporting character in the Marvel sphere, maybe we're setting up to see he and Falcon get their own starring picture.

The Falcon has enjoyed enough of a Marvel Comics presence to warrant his own movie. His most prominent ally has been Captain America, but he has also teamed with the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Defenders. The Falcon is notable as being the first African-American superhero in the Marvel canon. Multiple versions of the Falcon's early life have been utilized in the comics. Initially, the Falcon, born Sam Wilson (a bird-loving Harlem native), was depicted as a diligent social worker, but was then retconned to embody a reformed criminal and pimp. Consistently, the Falcon is shown to have a superhuman mental and emotional connection with birds, specifically his pet falcon Redwing, and is skilled in acrobatics and combat.

With Mackie already on his way to big stardom, one must understand his casting in this role to be something of an investment. Placing someone like Mackie, a growing presence in Hollywood, in a role like this suggests a bright future for the Falcon. What other side characters could get their own Marvel movies?
