Denzel Washington's co-star in bank heist thriller Inside Man has been hailed a real-life action hero after rushing to the aid of a woman being raped.

James 'PJ' Ransone was so alarmed on hearing muffled cries for help from the lower floor of his New York apartment building he ran downstairs to save her brandishing a metal bar.

When the assailant took flight, the actor pursued him down the street, eventually catching him after landing his make-shift weapon on the attacker's back.

Police were so impressed with Ransone's brave actions they've begged him to join the force, but the 26-year-old plays down his street justice heroics.

He tells Web site PageSix.com, "All of my friends would have done the same thing, but nobody else in my building came out. I did what anybody would have done.

"I pictured my mom, my girlfriend and every girl I've ever loved and thought, 'Vengeance is mine.' I said, 'You rapist piece of s**t' and heard a crack when I hit his shoulder blade. He mimed taking out a gun and said, 'Do you want to go to jail?'--and made a bee-line for the door.

"I cried, 'I'm not done with you yet,' and kept swinging. "I don't want any casting directors telling me I'm not tough enough."
