Rupert Murdoch Calls 'Gladiator' Reunion 'A Flop'

Nov 20, 2006 | 4:17am EST

The heavyweight reunion of Gladiator director Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe in new movie A Good Year has been branded a flop by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the man behind the studio that backed it.

Fox 2000 chief Murdoch has washed his hands of the romantic comedy, and prefers to focus on the studio's other picture The Devil Wears Prada, which cost $17 million to make and has already made a $100 million profit.

A Good Year, which sees Crowe team up with Scott as an Englishman who inherits a rundown house in France, cost $35 million but only made $3.7 million on its opening weekend.

Speaking at a shareholders meeting in Adelaide, Australia, Murdoch said, "You've got to take the rough with the smooth."
