'Iron Man' Sequel Already Tentatively Penciled In

Even before Iron Man made its first million on Thursday, the Hollywood suits behind the movie confirmed what was already logical: There will be a sequel.

Well, sorta.

At the premiere for this summer’s first surefire juggernaut, Viacom’s Sumner Redstone and Paramount Pictures’ Brad Grey told Entertainment Tonight that a follow-up to the movie would be released during the same week of 2010--assuming all goes well at the box office this weekend.

Just what does “well” mean?

B.O. prognosticator Steve Mason is predicting a weekend haul of $102 million, which, Mason says, would probably translate to a total domestic gross of $275-$300 million. Not a bad way to kick off blockbuster season, er, summer.

If the hypothetical Iron Man 2 were to open on Friday, April 30, 2010, the start of that year’s summer would shape up to look something like this year’s since the third Chronicles of Narnia installment, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, is already slated for May 7, 2010. (Similarly, this summer’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is to be released May 16, two weeks after Iron Man.)

The Jon Favreau-directed superhero movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, has already been the recipient of overwhelmingly positive reviews to go along with its built-in fanboy anticipation.
