Orlando Bloom Breaks Away from the Fantasy with Next Film

Aug 12, 2008 | 12:35pm EDT

At least for the time being Orlando Bloom has decided to leave the pirates and orcs behind to star in an independent film about life in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, based on the book Fools Rush In by American writer and filmmaker Bill Carter, who lived in Sarajevo at the height of the 1992-95 seige, Reuters reports.

Bloom--best known for working on big-budgeted fantasy films such as Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean--is excited about the prospects of doing a film that doesn’t require any CGI.

"This is a departure from the very big Hollywood productions," Bloom told reporters in Sarajevo after the film's crew met with the Sarajevo Mayor, who promised financial and other support for the film.

"I'm not in fact playing Bill in this movie, but I read the script and the very human story at the very core of this film spoke to me very clearly," he added but wouldn’t give any more details about the film.

The book describes Carter's life as an aid worker in besieged Sarajevo in 1993-94 and difficulties and joys he shared with local people trying to preserve the sanity during the 43-month-long shelling of the city by the Bosnian Serb forces.

Personally, working with sea monsters and talking trees sounds a lot less taxing on the emotions, but you know these actors; they have to be able to stretch.
