Shailene Woodley cannot be categorized. She's everything from a perplexed young woman entering the throes of adulthood (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) to the disgruntled daughter of George Clooney (The Descendants) to an intellectual shrinking violet (The Spectacular Now) to a blissfully spunky cancer patient (the developing The Fault in Our Stars movie). And the totalitarian regime under which Divergent operates will not stand for such multifaceted nonsense!
The first trailer for the YA novel adaptation has Woodley representing what brews inside of every young reader: the feeling of being different, of being special, of not fitting in, of perhaps being fated with the salvation of our world. (We YA readers are a narcissistic bunch, aren't we?) We see Kate Winslet playing the humorless dictator who has no patience for "divergents" — outliers in the societal system of organizing young men and women into personality categories — thanks in large to their proclivity to think freely and question authority. Luckily, Woodley has some fellow rebels on her side. What's more: they're good at throwing knives, and that'll get you far in guerilla war against a futuristic dictatorship.
Check out the trailer above, and wait for Divergent to hit theaters in March.
