The first official trailer for Alexander Payne's latest film, Nebraska is out and it looks a little more About Schmidt than The Descendants — in the best way possible.
Payne has always had an affinity for comedic performances and a strange, human looking cast (George Clooney aside), but he's taken it to new heights here, casting Saturday Night Live's Will Forte as the lead while character actor Bruce Dern plays his father, whose seemingly innocent delusions of winning a million-dollar prize start to spiral out of control when the pair have to confront men from his father's past (one played by Stacey Keach) who expect a cut of the money they don't know is imaginary.
The black-and-white serves to emphasize the stark emptiness of the landscape, and most of the characters are shot from a slight distance, where they begin to bleed into one another, creating a landscape of slightly tired people just trying to get by. Payne is always best when exploring the area where he grew up, and while he did not write this film, the trailer aches of familiarity and honesty.
