The first involves Lars Von Trier's coming disaster pic Melancholia, which has just landed John Hurt. The cast already includes Kiefer Sutherland, Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Rampling, Charlotte Gainsbourg, father and son thesps Stellan and Alexander Skarsgard as well as von Trier regular Udo Kier. The $7.5 million production, which starts shooting July 19 in Trollhattan, Sweden, will more than likely screen in competition at Cannes 2011, where Von Trier is a regular contributor. Peter A. Jensen, executive producer of the project, described it as "a beautiful film about the end of the world," that includes "a large object from outer space approaching Earth". So it this the art-house Armageddon? Pray it is not.

The next piece of news is about Ellen Page. The young star will topline Endgame Entertainment's developing dramatic feature based on Cynthia Wade's award-winning short documentary Freeheld. Based on a true story, Page will play New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree, who, along with her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, battled to secure Hester's pension benefits after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Wade's doc won the Oscar for best short documentary in 2008 and i can smell the awards buzz over this coming feature already.
