Gore VerbinskiFox is aggressively moving ahead with the long-gestating update of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and has brought Gore Verbinski on to direct.

Steve Conrad is working on the script for Verbinski and the studio. Insiders told Variety that Verbinski could begin shooting Walter Mitty as early as spring.

Casting is underway, although despite earlier rumors, Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly no longer involved with the project.

Given that Johnny Depp has now starred for Verbinski four times, The Risky Business blog opines on the intriguing possibility that he could step into Mitty's shoes.

Walter Mitty is based on James Thurber's classic 1947 short story about a daydreaming book editor who can't seem to do anything right, so imagines all sorts exciting lives for himself.

Samuel Goldwyn, who produced the 1947 film, has been trying to mount a remake since the mid-1990s. Fox picked up the project in the last several years from Paramount. Samuel Goldwyn Jr. and John Goldwyn are producing.
