Last month we reported that actress Amanda Seyfried (Dear John, Letters to Juliet) would be diversifying her oeuvre (slightly!) with her upcoming film I'm.mortal, a futuristic sci-fi thriller with, naturally, a romantic story arc. In the film's alternate universe, writer-director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show) has created a society in which humans have redesigned human biology to halt the aging process at 25, after which additional 'time' can be purchased in order to prolong an automatic, genetically engineered death. In other words, if you have enough money, you can live forever. But if you don't… well, enjoy those 25 years and thanks for doing your part to help the overpopulation problem!
Seyfried is set to play a beautiful heiress taken hostage by a man from the ghetto (Justin Timberlake) who is on the run after being falsely accused of murdering a wealthy man for his 'time.' Of course, the two fall in love while on the lam - presumably either from all those endorphins or good old fashioned Stockholm Syndrome - and discover that their relationship is more powerful than all the time in the world. Not ground-breaking territory for Seyfried.
Now, Heat Vision reports that Inception's Cillian Murphy is in final negotiations to hunt down Seyfried and Timberlake in the sci-fi drama as a 'Timekeeper' officer, who is "as precise as the time he keeps." A 22nd century repo man?
Murphy has done brilliantly in the past playing the cold, calculating villain (as Scarecrow in Batman Begins and Jackson Rippner in Red Eye), so I don't see why he won't be perfect in this role as well. His casting has definitely got me that much more excited for I'm.mortal, which otherwise suffers from the questionable presence of Justin Timberlake as the romantic lead. Still, Murphy has a history of picking good scripts in movies where he gets to play strong characters, and I don't see how he could go wrong with a sci-fi thriller from the terrific Andrew Niccol, even if he does have to share the screen with JT.
