‘Happytown Murders’ Picked By Lionsgate

MuppetPicture unrelated, but it still needed to be pointed out.

You know what makes things great? Puppets. You know what makes things awesome? Puppets doing adult things. This is why Avenue Q, Wonder Showzen, and the reported Muppet Movie written by Jason Segel are awesome. My theory is fool proof.

Needless to say, we have some awesome news. Happytown Murders is a project that was originally developed by the Jim Henson Co. that just got picked up by Lionsgate. Happytown is set in a world where puppets are real. And they’re treated like second class citizens. Think District 9. And when a popular 80’s children’s puppet show, ‘The Happytown Gang,’ start turning up dead, this film gets really dark. Think District 9 again, mixed with a little film noir murder mystery, and then add a little Sesame Street.

The only thing that holds me back from declaring this the most awesome movie news of the week is the inevitable Who Framed Roger Rabbit comparisons. I love the idea of this movie but it sounds a little to similar to one of my favorite childhood movies. But if this actually gets made and can distance itself from earlier films then yes, this will get the coveted Awesome grade (trademark pending) from myself.
