Neill Blomkamp's follow up to his groundbreaking 2009's blockbuster District 9, the science fiction action pic Elysium, has been picking up a lot of steam this week. After officially locking Sharlto Copley just a few days back, Deadline is now reporting that Matt Damon is in talks to work on the highly anticipated film as well.
Shrouded in secrecy, little is known about Elysium. The source recently claimed that the project is a "story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film," but other than that enigmatic description no other details exist. We do know that Media Rights Capital is funding the feature and will take it to potential distributors next year.
The inclusion of Damon would be a major coup for Blomkamp and MRC, both whom are looking for star power this time around with the higher profile project. Damon generally avoids big-budget fare unless it's a Bourne or Ocean's flick, but as we all know he won't be taking a major part (or any, for that matter) in the new installment of the Robert Ludlum-based spy franchise. If cast, this will be a big deal for everyone involved.
