20th Century Fox has a lot invested in both Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy. The duo, collectively responsible for DreamWorks' robot boxing drama Real Steel (due in October), are regulars at the studio; Levy being the creator for a number of hit Fox films including the Night at the Museum franchise and last year's Date Night. Jackman of course has toplined four X-Men films (with another on the way) in addition to movies like Someone Like You and Australia. Both have or had production companies set up through the company, making them star players on the lot. It's no surprise, then, that Fox would lure the pair back for a new project that, on paper, sounds awesome.
Deadline reports that the News Corp. owned company has bought an untitled action adventure pitch that will be scripted by Lost's Carlton Cuse as a vehicle for Jackman. There aren't any details available, so I'll speculate and say that the project will be set in a tropical paradise with all kinds of external forces threatening the Aussie A-lister and a rag-tag ensemble cast. Just wishful thinking...
Levy will direct and produce through his 21 Laps Entertainment banner along with partners Billy Rosenberg and Dan Cohen. Cuse is best known as the executive producer and showrunner of ABC's beloved sci-fi mystery series and though he's spent the last twenty years working in TV, he's done uncredited script work on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as well as a pair of Lethal Weapon sequels. I'm a longtime fan of the show and the films he's peppered, so don't blame me if I'm more than a little excited to see him get some work. I know he's capable of telling engaging stories and enthralling an audience; the fact that he's used to long-form storytelling doesn't bother me. A lot of the episodes he has personally scripted play like features anyway, notably season one's epic finale "Exodus Pt. 1 & 2", the acclaimed "Deus Ex Machina" and the emotional series finale "The End". Besides, if Damon Lindelof's stock continues to rise in Hollywood, so too should Cuse's.
