Looks like it is the end of the world for Steve Carell after The Office ends. But at least he gets to hook up with Keira Knightley as he heads off into the apocalypse. I can think of worse ways to go.
Anyway, for Carell’s first post-Office (ha! never gets old) gig he has landed the lead in Seeking A Friend for the End of the World. In the film, after the end of the world becomes eminent, Carell’s wife leaves him in her trails. Sad and lonely (who wouldn’t be? The world is ending!), he eventually hears from his high school sweetheart who confesses that she wants to spend the end of days with him. So he sets off on a road trip with his neighbor (Knightley) and whadayaknow they wind up falling for each other.
Doesn’t sound too bad with me. This comes from Lorene Scafaria in her directorial debut (she previously wrote Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) who penned the script as well. While there has been an unusual abundance of apocalyptic films recently, I’m going to go out on a limb and call this one worthwhile. Carell and Knightley should work well together and the whole impending-apocalypse-road-trip plot will set it apart from the pack. And besides, maybe it’ll give Carell a chance to let utilize some of those dramatic muscles we saw him flex in Little Miss Sunshine. Now that would be fantastic.
