Lars Von Trier has to be one of the most controversial filmmakers working today, with a body of work spanning decades, numerous genres and all kinds of levels of shock value. His last effort, the literally-painful-to-watch Antichrist, was a divisive drama that only fringe audiences embraced, but by the look of this beautiful new trailer for next film Melancholia, he may have achieved a truly epic piece of art.
The film is about two sisters whose uneasy relationship is challenged during a classy function, where it becomes evident that a nearby planet may very well collide with our own. Von Trier assembled a great cast, including Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg (who starred in Antichrist), Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling, to tell this romantically apocalyptic tale and they all look like they've brought their A-game. The film may premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where the filmmaker is a regular, but there is no set US release date yet, so this is all you've got to look at as of right now.
