2009's The Final Destination promised to be the final installment of the decade-old franchise, pumping the movie with as much over-the-top. 3-D gore as a movie screen can hold. For all intensive purposes, it was a comedy, albeit with buckets and buckets of blood.
With big box office success, another round of skipping out on fate was a no brainer (regardless of the fourth entry's titular finality) and Final Destination 5 is locked and loaded for August 20, 2011 -- but don't expect a retread of the previous films. Yes, the new trailer once again sports a collection of young, beautiful people looking terrified and running from Rube Goldberg-esque death traps, but this one has a bit of an edge, a darkness that wasn't even present in the first movie (remember Devon Sawa?).
In a strange way, Final Destination 5 evokes memories of old school disaster movies like The Towering Inferno, twisted torture flicks a la Saw and, with its new "kill someone or be killed" twist, weird quasi-horror similar to The Box. Whether that all adds up to an enjoyable finished feature is anyone's guess, but check out the second trailer and decide if this Final Destination has the scares to keep the series alive.
