J.J. Abrams is following up 2009 Star Trek with a sequel, set to hit theaters June 29, 2012. Oh, wait, no. That's impossible. There's no way he can make that deadline. This is the guy who took six years to tell a freakin' story about people realizing that their island was—sorry, I don't want to get into that. Anyway, now that there's an empty release date going to waste, the studio figures, "May as well give it to another sequel." Reportedly, G.I. Joe: Retaliation will be taking the June 29 date, while Star Trek 2 gets pushed back until further notice.
But of course, none of this is any surprise. The film will most likely find its way to theaters somewhere around summer 2013. Abrams is currently working with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. Chris Pine will be returning to the film as Captain Kirk.
