Dee Rees' Pariah will kick you right in the heart. That's a good thing.

Alike (Adepero Oduye) is a Brooklyn teenager amidst a contemptuous war with her identities of sexuality and gender. Pariah offers an unwavering and difficult story that is more than worth your watch. The film debuted at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival to overwhelming praise. Writer/director Dee Rees paints an explosive and sharp picture of a young woman's struggle against her family, neighborhood and self. An exemplary study of humanity that our generation is fortunate to have at its disposal. This is what art is meant to do: breathe honesty, however painful. For those to whom this honesty rings true might find in this film much more than a captivating story.

The below poster, voted on by fans of the film, was released via Twitter by Focus Features.
