Any true Grey's Anatomy fan would agree that Dr. Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey) is one of the main reasons for the show's continued success. So when news started spreading that the current eighth season would be the last for our favorite male doctor, it caused a bit of an uproar (meaning that I furiously stomped my feet on the floor and screamed for hours into my pillow). Seriously, though, a lot of people were upset and hoped for some miracle to come along and make it all untrue. Well, it looks like prayers might actually be coming true, because word on the street is our dear McDreamy may not be leaving the show after all.
According to People magazine, the actor appears to have had a change of heart about the whole matter and isn't quite ready to throw in the towel just yet...as long as the network agrees to a few conditions. Dempsey recently told reporters, "The biggest point for me in negotiations is getting time off to come race, so if I don't miss races, I'll probably stay on Grey's Anatomy." What is it with men and their obsession with cars! Additionally, he went on to say that while racing is his true passion, "I also enjoy the show. It keeps me in town so I can be around my family. So we'll see. Hopefully we can work out a deal." Keep your fingers crossed ladies!
If you think about it, it'd be to the show's detriment to let such a pivotal character as McDreamy slip away. Not only would they lose the show's main love story, but they'd also be taking away our main source of eye candy. We'd only have Alex Karev left to fawn over! And I'm sure the series would suffer for it. The only worst move they could make would be to let Ellen Pompeo's Meredith Grey sign off as well (which would really suck since then they'd have to re-think the name of the show). So if I were the ABC network higher-ups, I'd be more than accommodating and just give the man what he wants.
Here's hoping a deal is made and McDreamy will continue to swoon us for at least another year.
