In 2011, Fox introduced the surprise hit New Girl, a sitcom starring Zooey Deschanel as a socially clueless but warm-hearted outcast who moves in with three diversely listless manchildren, and brings out the best in each of them. The series looked like it might bank entirely on Deschanel's adorability, but actually turned out to be an extremely clever, well-written, consistently funny comedy. The Mindy Project (formerly It's Messy), created by and starring The Office writer and ccostar Mindy Kaling, looks like it might be working with the same full arsenal.
The New Girl likeness isn't lost on the network. At Fox's upfronts event, the trailer (which you can watch below) was presented by creator Kaling and by New Girl's Deschanel, who even tried to pass on her trademark title "adorkable" to Kaling and her character.
Premiering in the fall (set to air on Tuesdays at 9:30 PM ET/PT), the show features Kaling as an obsessed-with-but-still-unlucky-in-love doctor, with some apparently self-destructive habits and pervasive insecurities. While the trailer does fly high on the powers of femininity, it's not something that men won't find entertaining. It doesn't matter what gender you are, there's nothing unfunny about Mindy Kaling backpedaling after inviting Ed Helms to sleep with her on the first date.
