Steven Spielberg has started talking to the dead for an eerie new TV project about desperate families who find a way to communicate with their departed loved ones.

The movie mogul will produce a new 12-hour miniseries for Sci Fi Channel, which is sure to spark controversy as he dabbles in the afterlife.

The TV special will be Spielberg's first collaboration with the Sci Fi Channel since his alien invasion hit Taken in 2002.

Taken remains the most-watched event in the network's history.
