The Office creator Ricky Gervais has been approached to write an episode for the third series of the hit U.S. version of the comedy.

The English comedian starred as cringe-inducing boss David Brent in the original BBC version of the show and sold the concept to U.S. TV network NBC, who cast The 40 Year-Old Virgin star Steve Carell as the Brent-like manager Michael Scott.

Gervais says, "The success of the American Office is overwhelming. It's a pleasure and honor to continue being involved.

"They've could've panicked and watered it down, overreacted for live studio catchphrases and unrealistic characters begging for laughs--but they didn't."
