It's tough out there for a new TV show. Creators put their hearts and souls into pilots, introducing their baby bird-like new series into the big, harsh world, all the while, hoping and praying their baby can fly. Well, as you know, some shows flourish and some shows plummet. Others glide along, barely getting by or delaying the inevitable: cancellation. It's a cruel, swift death we often call The Ax. Each week during Fall Premiere Season, we'll take a look at the ratings for fall's new crop of shows and tell you which ones are flapping their baby wings just hard enough, which ones are flying, and which ones sadly, will be a victim of the Ax Factor. This week, Arrow, Elementary, and Vegas received full-season orders, while Emily Owens, M.D. took another deep cut.
Happier than Fox During World Series Ratings
Translation: Safe! Revolution (NBC, Mondays at 10 PM ET): Fall's breakout hit aired a repeat this week, but we expect big numbers upon its Oct. 29 return. Go On (NBC, Tuesdays at 9 PM ET): After a week off, Matthew Perry and his band of misfits returned to 6.4 million viewers and a 2.5 in the demo. Not bad! Also, they already have a full-season order. Zoloft for everyone! The New Normal (NBC, Tuesdays at 9:30 PM ET): Ryan Murphy's not-so-normal comedy isn't faring as well as Go On, but 4.5 million viewers, a 1.8 in the demo, and a full-season order should be enough to keep him happy for now.
Ben and Kate (Fox, Tuesdays at 8:30 PM ET): B&K took a tiny jump this week, up to 3 million viewers and a 1.4 in the demo. They're safe for now since Fox already ordered more episodes, but we'll talk later once Season 2 comes into play.
The Mindy Project (Fox, Tuesdays at 9:30 PM ET): Repeat! Thanks, X Factor snafu. Still, Mindy will be around for at least the rest of this season.
Vegas (CBS, Tuesdays at 10 PM ET): After a brief vacation, Vegas took a tumble — a 25 percent tumble, to be exact. The casino drama fell to 10.7 million viewers and a 1.5 in the demo, but they also got a full-season order, so they can still hit the craps tables for now. Elementary (CBS, Thursdays at 10 PM ET): Sherlock and Watson were down just a smidge this week, with 10.2 million viewers and a 2.2 in the demo. These numbers aren't great for CBS, but the network still took a leap of faith and gave Lucy Liu her full-season order.Arrow (The CW, Wednesdays at 8 PM ET): The CW has hit their bullseye with this show, and the Arrow crew is reaping the rewards — the show received a full-season order after another solid week, with 3.5 million viewers and a 1.1 in the demo. Chicago Fire (NBC, Wednesdays at 10 PM ET): We were wrong! Surprisingly, the boys from the critically panned Chicago Fire took a 20 percent jump this week, earning 6.3 million viewers (up from 5.9 last week), and a 1.8 rating in the adult demo. It was enough to justify five more scripts from NBC, so shirtless Taylor Kinney fans can feel safe for now. As Shaky as Tim Lincecum's Place in San Francisco
Translation: Only Time Will Tell
The Neighbors (ABC, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM ET): Not a huge change for the alien crew this week, but this week's 6.9 million is certainly better than last week's 6.5. If they keep up the pace they could earn a bump up to the next category, but they're still nowhere near Modern Family — and the show is a critical dud — so we doubt it.
Nashville (ABC, Wednesdays at 10 PM ET): Nashville experienced a shocking 29 percent drop last week, but they remained steady this week with 6.6 million viewers and a 2.0 in the demo. We're pulling for you, Connie!
Last Resort (ABC, Thursdays at 8 PM): This submarine sank even lower this week, as the World Series pretty much stole the male demographic. The Scott Speedman drama was down 24 percent from last week to 6.4 million viewers and a 1.3 in the adult demo. The news isn't great, but the post-series numbers should be a more adequate marker for how the show is doing — and DVR numbers continue to help.
666 Park Avenue: (ABC, Sundays at 10 PM ET): Bring out the Dom Pérignon! Well, 4.9 million and a 1.8 in the demo wouldn't normally merit a Dom-caliber celebration, but this classy new spookfest experienced its first bit of good news when it jumped 20 percent this week in its demo.
Beauty and the Beast (The CW, Thursdays at 9 PM ET): Kristin Kreuk and her "Beast" took a tiny dip this week, earning 1.9 million viewers and a 0.7 in the demo. These aren't terrible numbers for The CW, but the quality of the show still has us scratching our heads. As Screwed as the Detroit Tigers
Translation: Fear the Reaper
Partners (CBS, Mondays at 8:30 PM ET): This dud aired a repeat this week, but we still can't see it going on much longer.
The Mob Doctor (Fox, Mondays at 8 PM ET): Well, Fox announced that it's still coming back on Nov. 5, after the Series is over. Still — DOA. Let Matt Saracen find a good job, already.
Emily Owens, M.D. (The CW, Tuesdays at 9 PM ET): Much like the character Emily Owens, the show can't seem to get its s*** together: It dropped a heavy 40 percent to 1.1 million viewers and a 0.3 in the demo. When does Cult start, again?
Guys With Kids (NBC, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM ET): Put the kids to bed, already — Guys With Kids reached a series low on Wednesday, with only 3.8 million viewers and a 1.3 in the demo.
Deader Than the St. Louis Cardinals
Translation: Canceled Made In Jersey (CBS, Fridays at 9 PM ET): Who? Cancelled.
Animal Practice (NBC, Wednesdays at 8 PM ET): Well, the good news is Weeds star Justin Kirk can run off and find a better show. Oh, and when Community comes back, the monkey will still have a job.
