New Girl

Is Thursday the new Tuesday? Possibly, if Fox's latest scheduling experiment is a success. The network announced Wednesday that it will air brand-new episodes of New Girl and The Mindy Project on Thursday, April 4, in Glee's post-American Idol time slot. It's not a permanent move, but if the comedies perform well, maybe it could be.

Thursday nights have been good to CBS comedies Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men, but the night has long been home to NBC's comedy block. However, with 30 Rock already over and the upcoming series finale of The Office scheduled for May — not to mention the continuous ratings drop of Community — the night is wide open for comedy competition.

Fox has been riding a wave of ratings success in recent years, but the current TV season has not been kind to the network. This experiment could shake up the schedule in a very good way, possibly paving the way for a Fox Thursday night comedy block. Then again, it could also fail miserably, like when ABC tried to air new episodes of its comedies Don't Trust the B---- and Happy Endings on Sunday night. This situation is different, though, because presumably Fox will actually promote the new episodes — not to mention the fact that although American Idol ratings are down, it's still a huge show for the network that will give a viewer bump to whatever it's paired with.
