UPDATE: HIMYM co-creator Carter Bays stated, “It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years. And yet Cristin Milioti is, against all odds, exactly what we were looking for. She made us laugh on 30 Rock, she made us swoon in Once, and her ukulele skills are no joke. We're thrilled to welcome her to the How I Met Your Mother family, and look forward to getting to know her -- and the character she plays -- much better in the coming final season."
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we have finally met the mother. After eight seasons, How I Met Your Mother finally revealed the titular character's face. [Avert your eyes, spoiler-phobic fans who somehow managed to click on this headline...] And the mother is — insert fanfare here — Broadway star Cristin Milioti.
Milioti is best known for making you cry in her Tony-nominated turn as Girl in the musical Once, the stage adaptation of the 2006 film of the same name. Although Milioti didn't take home a trophy for her performance, the musical itself won eight Tonys, including Best Musical. Check out her goosebump-inducing singing here:
Although Milioti's stage work has earned her the most headlines, you have seen the New Jersey native on your TV screen before. She appeared in three episodes of The Sopranos in 2006 and 2007, and two episodes of the short-lived 2009 ABC cop dramedy The Unusuals. She also had a memorable role as a Sarah Silverman-like female comedian on a 2011 episode of 30 Rock.
Now, though, she'll forever be known as "The Mother." Is she the guitar-carrying, boot-wearing, yellow-umbrella-wielding mother you envisioned?
