After a good deal of conversation over whether Doctor Who's new leading player — the twelfth actor to be slated with the Doctor role — might veer from tradition in gender or race, fans are once again treated to a performer who fits the white, male, middle-aged bill. But nobody can be all that upset with this resistance to progress considering the indiviudal in question: Peter Capaldi, best known as Malcolm Tucker from Armando Iannucci's The Thick of It and In the Loop, has been cast as the new Doctor.
The news was announced during a Doctor Who BBC special on Sunday; Capaldi delivered a surprisingly expletive-free statement regarding his acceptance of the role: "Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight."
And so, we celebrate the incoming of the comic and dramatic wonder that is Capaldi, knowing that he will bring a unique but appropriate charm and style to Doctor Who.
