RuPaul’s Drag Race made history when it premiered in 2009. The first season was a simple little reality series. Not only did the show raise the profile of the Logo Network but it also changed the face of television.
The success of the series also spawned two spin-offs, RuPaul’s Drag U and the new cooking show, Drag My Dinner Party. Logo is re-airing the first season with added commentary by RuPaul. Here are the the 10 most memorable moments of the first season.
1. Akashia vs. Michelle Williams/"Messy Man"
This is the shadiest exchange between a drag race contestant and a celebrity judge. Michelle Williams was not feeling Ms. Akashia, but seemed to be feeling quite a few Absolut cocktails. Akashia gave her a side eye. When the girls left the stage, Williams called her a "messy man." That didn’t stop Williams from crying when Akashia lip-synched "Break the Dawn."
2. Tammie Brown's Lackluster Lip-synch
Brown was out of her element. She’s a character queen with a love for vintage. She was forced to sing Destiny’s Child. By the time she was forced to lip-synch she’d had it. So she ended up just dancing and sashaying away gracefully. She did pave the way for a character queen like Jinkx Monsoon to win.
3. Akashia Eats the Runway
Akashia was the first, and last, queen to ever fall on the runway.
4. Shannel Flips Her Wig.
When the judges said Shannel wasn’t vulnerable enough, she literally flipped her wig during the lip-synch. This was the first time in RuPaul drag herstory where a queen performed without her wig.
5. Ongina’s Reveal
Ongina became overcome with the emotion during deliberation on the runway. She confessed to RuPaul and the American public that she was HIV positive. She went out to become an advocate and educator for HIV awareness.
Nina Flowers was the first drag racer to coin her own catchphrase. She calls all her fellow queens, “Loca!” When she’s excited she screams, “Loca!” When she’s angry she says, “Loca!” She even released a song called “Loca!”
BeBe Zahara Benet is the first queen to recieve a special runway intro from RuPaul. Is it any coincidence that Bebe went on to win the competition?
8. Shannel’s Soupworthy Performance
When Shannel had to describe an Absolut Mandarin cocktail she made a slurp heard round the world. Her sexually suggestive lip smacking was featured on E! Channel’s The Soup. Since then, RuPaul's Drag Race has been regularly been featured on the news clip show.
9. Tammie Brown Makes RuPaul Lose It
Tammie Brown and RuPaul duke it out at the reunion. 'Nuff said.
10. "Face, face, face"
This is one of the most memorable moments in the entire run of the show. Bebe's rap is everything!
These are just some of the memorable moments of the "lost" season. One thing we musn't forget to mention is the lighting. We think The Big Gay Sketch Show put it best.
