Mischa Barton's starring role in new TV show The Beautiful Life is in doubt -- as she awaits medical clearance to begin production.

The 23-year-old was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold on Thursday, after reportedly suffering a meltdown and calling cops to her Los Angeles home the previous day.

Bosses at network the CW have reportedly declined to push back shooting for the program, scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

The actress' publicist suggests production may go on without her, insisting Barton's presence on set "will ultimately be contingent upon her progress and doctor's orders."

Los Angeles police and Barton's spokesperson have confirmed that the actress required assistance for "a medical issue," but have not revealed further details.
