Ricky Gervais, The Atheist, Will Play God in 'Afterlife'

Jul 22, 2011 | 6:37am EDT

Ricky GervaisWell isn't this just adorable. Ricky Gervais is making himself God. Wait, isn't he an atheist? Yes. Yes he is. And he's going to play God? Yes. Yes he is.

Now that that's settled, remember back to a week ago when we reported that Gervais was teaming with Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips for a show called Afterlife? Gervais wasn't set to star in the show, but we knew he'd make an appearance. I don't think any of us knew he was going to make THE appearance.

On his blog, Gervais described his holy character:

But he's a slightly different God to the one you may have seen in Bruce Almighty and other Hollywood films. He's an arrogant, wisecracking son of a bitch, who thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread. (So another stretch for me as an actor then.)

Actually he thinks he's the best thing ever because... well, he is. (He invented sliced bread by the way.) He also loves welcoming atheists to heaven with a smug grin on his face.

He likes atheists deep down though. Or rather he likes good atheists. He admires the fact that they were moral people even though they didn't believe they would ever be rewarded with everlasting life.

Well, this should be interesting. Too bad we've got to wait until 2012 to see it.
