More Maya Rudolph.
That's expanding from my personal mantra to a national maxim. SNL monarch Lorne Michaels is retooling his upcoming NBC series, Up All Night, to better showcase the talents of Bridesmaids star Rudolph. The sitcom actually stars Christina Applegate (Married...With Children) and Will Arnett (Arrested Development) as a married couple first entering parenthood. Initially, Applegate's character was going to be a P.R. agent working for Maya Rudolph, a confidante character. Gears have been shifted, however, and Rudolph will get a role better serving her talents for offbeat and outlandish characters: she will play a talk show host for whom Applegate will play producer.
Wise move. When talented comics like Rudolph are shoved into straight-man side roles, with little more to contribute than a few sarcastic jeers here and there, it's like they might as well not even be there. Giving the SNL maven a presumably eccentric and attention-commanding character to play will do this already well-cast show a great service.
Now as for Arnett? Let's hope he's not exactly an adequate dad and husband, because we all know he's at his best when he's teetering on the brink of psychopathy.
