So we've basically learned everything there is to know about the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards—Selena Gomez will emcee the pre-show, Lady Gaga will be the opening act, but they have yet to announce who will host the big event....until now that is. MTV has decided to make a bold move with this year's host....by not having one at all. Uh, WHAT?! What do you mean there's going to be no host? Executive producer Amy Doyle told Billboard earlier this week that "Hosting is such a unique element. We feel we got it right by putting new talent on the stage like Chelsea and Russell (Brand). We're really challenging ourselves to find the right person so that the show feels complete." But apparently the network wasn't up to the task since the website has updated their story with an editor's note stating, "Since this interview took place, MTV decided to go with no host."
Host or no host, the VMA's are known to be a star-studded affair and provide spectacular performances every year, so it's still definitely worth watching. But who's going to be directing everything and transitioning our viewers and performers from one act to another? It could all end up looking a little messy and unprofessional, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm all for trying new things, but messing with a long-standing Hollywood tradition could end up backfiring badly. Many A-list stars have been in the host hot seat before including Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Ben Stiller. So it will be interesting to see how fans react when the microphone stands alone.
