Awkward! The Most Poorly Timed Movies In History

An awkward moment in our midst. After the tragic Aurora, Color., movie theater shooting, Warner Bros. decided to put a little distance between its gun-heavy film and the events that took place. And to buy some time to remove a scene that featured a massive theater shooting. (And some time still, to rework the plot after said removal.) The release date was bumped from Sept. 7, 2012 to Jan. 23, 2013.

In 2002, when the Colin Farrell-led movie was to be released, John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo unleashed a series of sniper attacks across Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Given that ‘Phone Booth’ centered around a sniper attacking New York City, 20th Century Fox decided to delay the release of the film. Good call, guys.

The Ben Affleck-directed movie bore a sad, striking resemblance to the case of missing girl Madeleine McCann, who disappeared from an apartment her family was staying in on May 3, 2007. Due to the sensitive nature (and how the case of Madeleine made daily headlines) of the film, the film’s original release date of December 28, 2007 was postponed for nearly six months.

Oh no! Leave it to a bunch of sharks to attack people right around the release of the movie ‘Shark Night 3D’! Too real, you guys. Too close for comfort, no matter how terrible the movie was received.

You think the movie is a love story, but it’s actually about 9/11? Oof, come on guys. When the film came out in March of 2010, it felt like it was still too soon — especially since the movie used the tragic events as a sad plot twist.

Who DIDN’T want to go to space camp when they were a kid? Still, the film turned into a ship that was never going to float to success given two things: 1) ‘SpaceCamp’’s intended release date was shortly after the Challenger shuttle explosion, and 2) A malfunction simulated in the film was similar to what actually happened to the Challenger. Yikes.

‘Big Trouble’ was intended to hit theaters Sept. 21, 2001, but, thanks to a storyline involving a bomb on a plane, the comedy was pushed back to 2002. Yes, big trouble indeed.

While the movie didn’t cause too much controversy here in the US, it was pulled from theaters overseas after an earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed thousands of people in Japan. Why? Because the Clint Eastwood film begins with a tsunami wiping out a coastal town in Thailand.

Another film plagued by drama overseas, ‘300’ caused quite a ruckus in Iran. You see, folks in the country were outraged because they believed the movie was a project secretly funded by the U.S. government to prepare Americans for war against Iran. Needless to say, no one in the country went to see the film.
