Merle's death wasn't tragic because he was a great guy — he was, frankly, exactly the opposite. But the fact that he TRIED to do one good thing before he passed (violently), and then was cruelly left behind to become a Walker for his brother to kill, was just so horrifyingly evil — even for the Governor, whose "code of ethics" has a strict clause about never letting someone turn. And when Daryl Dixon cries, we all cry. [AMC]

Say what you will about this principle character on the AMC series, this scene was a killer. After a prison inmate leads the walkers to the group's safe zone, a pregnant Lori gets pinned down with Maggie and Carl, who are forced to perform a life-sucking c-section in order to save Lori's baby. They know this means Lori's end, and little grown-up Carl does the most heartbreaking deed: Once his mother has passed out, he delivers the fatal gunshot that will prevent her from becoming a walker. Every so often, there comes one of those epic television moments that stops you in your tracks and haunts you for the entire off-season. Rita's death on Dexter was one of those. Dexter felt himself victorious after finally taking out the monstrous Trinity Killer, but he didn't know then that he had already suffered the greatest loss imaginable: Trinity had taken Rita. A good woman whose only crime was loving the wrong man. [Showtime]

As far as AMC shows go, Mad Men has a pretty low body count. So when a member of Sterling Cooper does get the axe — especially when said axe is self-wielded — it proves especially powerful. When sad, defeated, lonely Lane Pryce couldn't bear the shame of being an embezzler, he opted to hang himself in his office. And he was one of the (relatively) good ones, too. [AMC]

Brendan Fraser's Ben wasn't even a regular character on Scrubs, but his importance in the lives of the series' emotional powerhouses Perry Cox and his wife Jordan (Ben's sister) was made palpable when an unattended case of leukemia ultimately took the happy-go-lucky photographer. The show's creator Bill Lawrence calls Ben's final episode his tribute to 'The Sixth Sense,' as fans didn't find out that Dr. Cox's "hallucinations" of Ben were all in his head until the very end. But on one fateful Mother's Day, young Chuckie went sorting through his father's belongings and came across a photograph of a woman he only knew in his dreams. What's heartbreaking and beautiful about Charlie's death on Lost is that the turn of events finally turned the screw-up into the hero he had dreamed of being since his churchgoing days. Only Charlie could have saved the island from the explosive destruction, as the Dharma computer code that would decrease the radioactivity required an innate connection to music. Rock star wannabe Charlie Pace protected the island, warned Desmond about the boat offshore, and saved his life. [ABC]

And here it is: the saddest death in TV history. It wasn't so much how Seymour the dog died that was so heartbreaking, but how he lived. After his owner and best friend Philip J. Fry was cryogenically frozen, not to be awakened for a 1000 years, Seymour waited for him to return. For 12 years. The pup's loyalty kept him on the sidewalk outside of Fry's workplace for over a decade, waiting patiently, but sadly, for his best friend did not return. [Fox]
