If anyone's going to remake a safe and goofy 1950s comedy, it might as well be Steve Martin, who founded his comedic career on riffing upon his squeaky clean image. Martin starred in the 1991 update of the original 'Father of the Bride,' a film that surprisingly earned star Spencer Tracy a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Martin didn't see the same love (unless you think an MTV Movie Award nomination is on the same level), but the movie did live up to the family friendly farce of the original. [Cred

Children of the '90s may not realize their beloved, pet-themed adventure movie was previously adapted (it's based on a 1961 children's book by Sheila Burnford) by Disney in the '60s. Purists take note: the 1993 version actually changed up the breed roster, featuring a Bulldog, Golden Retriever, and a Himalayan cat instead of the original's Bull Terrier, Labrador Retriever, and Siamese cat trio. Thai directing duo The Pang Brothers revamped their own Thai language film, the story of a deaf-mute hitman on assignment in the titular city, into their English-language debut. Instead of saddling their star, Nic Cage, with the unique impairment, the Pang Brothers turned the female lead into the deaf-mute. Don't call Adam Sandler lowbrow. The crowdpleasing comedian turned a 1936 screwball comedy from Frank Capra into a manchild version of "Blank Check." Like the original (which starred Gary Cooper), Deeds (Sandler) inherits a wad of cash (this time in the form of a $40 billion company). "Bangkok Dangerous" isn't Nic Cage's only lesser-known action revamp. In 2000, he starred in the remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds," a 1974 car theft drama as well known for its star vehicle — a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 dubbed "Eleanor" — as it was its human leading man, H.B. The '80s sci-fi movie "Battle Beyond the Stars" is occasionally referred to as a remake of "The Magnificent Seven" in space. That's easy to see, but the line can be traced back further, as "Magnificent Seven" is a remake of famed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai."
