Michael Arbeiter: The island on 'Lost' might not always be the most habitable of locale, what with the polar bears, the monsters, the nefarious Others — not to mention the fact that the only way to get there is via plane crash — but if you can wade past all the treachery (and that pain-in-the-ass time travel shtick), then this tropical paradise will eventually grant you something no other place on Earth can: enlightenment. The truest appreciation for your life, your family (be it the one into which you are born or the one you form along your journeys), and yourself. The island is a mysterious force, that’s for sure. But it’s always working in the name of good, and it gets everyone exactly where they’re supposed to go.
