Over the Bond franchise's 50 year history, pop stars aplenty have broken out of the big screen's confines to see their theme songs embraced by audiences and hit the charts. In the past two decades this has become more of a rarity, but leave it to Adele's powerful vocals and jazzy backup in "Skyfall" to remind us why the right opportunity can be a force to be reckoned with. Adele delivers all the soul on display in her '21' album into the theme, with a dash of 007 mainstay Shirley Bassey for good measure. Auto-tune not required — Adele has a license to belt and she makes full use of it again in "Skyfall." [WENN]

One of radio and entertainment's favorite tunes (the song has been featured in spots for 'Wreck-It Ralph' and 'Trouble With the Curve'), "Some Nights" usurped "Call Me Maybe" as 2012's most contagious hit. And thank goodness — one part Paul Simon, one part Queen, and one part D'banj, the single offers us a sound that's difficult to find on today's uninspired Billboard 100. Nate Ruess' breakout vocals mixed with a strong afrobeat influence gives the song an interesting hook, and its "99 Luftballons" call-out only makes it cooler. We're glad we'll have "Some Nights" in our heads for nights, days, months… and hopefully years. [Fueled By Ramen]

“Die Young”, the lead single from Ke$ha’s second album, captures perfectly the feelings of living every day like it’s your last and of maintaining a youthful spirit no matter how old you get. Plus, she proved she has singing chops outside of autotune when she released a deconstructed version of this title track that sounded positively beautiful. Forget Taylor Swift and her revenge by sulky songwriting. Forget Nicki Minaj and her bubblegum rap. The true girl-power provocatrix of 2012, as she has been for several years now, was M.I.A. First, she appalled macho football fans with her extended middle finger at the Super Bowl. Then she followed that with “Bad Girls,” a fuel-injected ode to female misbehavior that pulses with syncopated Arabian beats and a mantra for a chorus that’s pure anthemic swagger: “Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well.” When Women’s Lib comes to Dubai, it’ll sound like this. There is nothing to like about Rihanna's continued relationship with Chris Brown, but if 2012 did produce one great thing with them together, it was this collaboration from RiRi's album 'Talk That Talk.' An absolutely simple song, this is just a ferocious beat over some nonsense lyrics that liken eating a birthday cake to the kinds of things that adults do in dark rooms to celebrate in their birthday suits. We never thought that repeating "cake, cake, cake, cake, cake," in the lyrics would be just as good as eating it. [WENN]

Perhaps it's because 2012 was a year of big change for me — and leaving Manhattan was probably the biggest one — but this song is just so beautiful in its simplicity that it almost makes me cry (yeah, I said it) when I hear it. Its lullaby-esque melody gives it that something extra that really transports you to a very specific feeling, place, and time. (But maybe that's just me!) It's so easy to trash this song. After all, the lyrics invite the listener to think about garbage: "Just a shy guy looking for a two-ply Hefty bag to hold my love." Strangely enough, Hefty didn't pick up the song for commercial purposes — but Tri-State Ford Dealerships did, giving East Coast audiences a reason to never watch TV live again.
