Winter’s Coolest Trend: Slouchy Knit Caps

Tis the season! For freezing cold weather, that is. The crisp, fall breeze has come and gone only to be replaced by the harsh winds and freezing temps. We know wrapping yourself up in a sleeping bag style puffer and keeping on those sweatpants seems like the only way to stay warm. But there really is an easy way to maintain a sense of style during the winter months.

Enter the beanie.

These fitted knit hats have been around for seemingly ever. Once the staple of fishermen, the beanie is now the go-to accessory for serious fashionistas. Take a look around and it’s hard to not to notice – a knit cap on every noggin. Simply put: The beanie is having a serious style moment.

Part of its popularity can be attributed to the fact that it’s comfortable and effortless. Rarely are fashion trends so relaxed. And the vast array of styles and fabrications — from the fitted fur to slouchy angora styles — look right on both downtown and uptown girls alike. Personally, we’re partial to it being oversized and in cashmere (but then again, we’re down for everything cashmere). And the biggest plus of the beanie? Say bye-bye to bad hair days.

While the beanie can tiptoe into hipster terror-tory, the key is to keep the rest of your outfit effortlessly stylized: boyfriend sweater, skinnies and moto boots. Once things get to schleppy, it verges into homeless (ala Mary Kate circa 2006). And that’s not cute – even if it is cashmere.

In honor of this warm but cool hat, we’ve curated a shoppable gallery of our favorite beanies. Proof that staying cozy and chic are not mutually exclusive.
