The Long And Short Of It: Trish Halpin

This is the first part of our hair series where each day we profile a member of our staff and the products they vow by.  Today we’re highlighting our photo editor, Trish Halpin, and what it takes to maintain her ginger mane.

I have a lot of very long, thick, (dyed) red hair so all my products have been carefully selected over the years to help keep my color in tact. Since my current hue isn’t natural and red dye washes out pretty quickly, I try to only wash my hair once a week and only with shampoos and conditioners designed specifically for redheads. Hair ProductsTyler Joe

Quick science lesson: the molecules of red dye are too big to be absorbed into each hair (as it would for brunette shades), so the red coloring just sits on the strands and the wrong shampoo will strip the copper tones after one wash. To avoid this, I use the Pureology line for redheads; the shampoo is tinted red, the conditioner is super moisturizing, and the additional oils and serum act as a light copper glaze in between salon visits. Also, since I’m only shampooing once a week, a shower cap and a good dry shampoo are essential to keep my blown out strands fresh and copper in between washes. My key to keeping red is to wash my tresses as little as possible, but each time with the right products.
