Trouble in LVMH Paradise

Great partnerships are built to last: peanut butter and jelly, mohair and leather, Marc Jacobs and err- wait

Rumor has it that after 16 years together Marc Jacob’s LVMH contract isn’t going to be renewed when it’s up next month. Though an industry source claimed to Reuters, “Nothing has been decided yet”, French magazine Challenges is declaring Jacobs departure has already been internally approved. Jacobs –who has been with LVMH since 1997- was the man behind the launch of women and men’s RTW lines, and has created partnerships with famous artists such as Stephen Sprouse and Yayoi Kusama.

The move may come as an effort to regain some of the LV brands lost prestige.

The news comes just days after Louis Vuitton announced the hiring of Proenza Schouler accessories designer Darren Spaziani as a move to further progress the company’s energies in offering high-end leather handbags. Though earlier this month the brand seemed to be making a comeback with their new summer bags selling out fast. The move may come as an effort to regain some of the LV brands lost prestige. Having unsuccessfully foreseen customers move away from logo-branded goods, the company kept producing their signature LV-embossed bags.

“Marc Jacobs has done fantastic work at Vuitton, but I think that today we need to reframe the leather goods and fashion proposition which has until now mainly been focused on the bags,” a luxury goods expert told Reuters.

It could be Jacobs himself behind the desicion.

So who could possibly be set to step into Marc Jacob’s well-crafted shoes? One report has former Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere as the top choice. A spokesperson for Vuitton declined to comment on the rumors, and we are left with our Lovemarc lip gel in Strange Magic covered mouths on the floor.
