Every year, the only reason to watch the VMAs is to catch that one strange moment that everyone will be talking and tweeting about. Here’s our predictions:

1. Kanye West will perform his single “Black Skinhead,” and will likely make his first public appearance alongside Kim Kardashian since the birth of their daughter North earlier this summer. There’s always a shot that the increasingly volatile West will do or say something that will make half the audience facepalm at once.

2. Since Lady Gaga‘s new single “Applause” decisively lost the battle of the chart divas to Katy Perry‘s “Roar,” she’ll likely try to upstage Perry’s performance.

3. Robin Thicke will reportedly be performing his inescapable “Blurred Lines” with guest star Miley Cyrus, who will no doubt showcase her newfound love of twerking.

4. Chances are strong that the multi-nominated Justin Timberlake will bring his pal Jimmy Fallon on stage.

5. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are performing their pro-gay marriage hit “Same Love.” If there’s going to be a political aspect to the show, perhaps the duo could address the growing global outrage over Russia’s new anti-gay measures.

6. Now that the *NSYNC rumors have been squashed by Lance Bass himself, what can we expect for a surprise reunion?

7. Finally, as watchers of The Colbert Report well know, Daft Punk will be making a “surprise appearance” during the show. The ultimate surprise? If they took off the robot heads and turned out to be Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart all along.
