Is there anyone who doesn't love Steve Martin? If you're honest with yourself you'll realize the answer is no. He's talented, funny, and just gives off that whole genuine good guy vibe. The list of his accomplishments is both vast and impressive: he's hosted the Oscars and Saturday Night Live (the latter he's done 15 times!), won four Grammy Awards, and even picked up an Emmy. But now he's able to add one more honorable recognition to his showbiz resume: his band, Steep Canyon Rangers, has been named Entertainers of the Year at the 22nd annual International Bluegrass Music Association Awards in Nashville. Looks like all that banjo playing is paying off.
Martin joked during his acceptance speech, saying, "I want to congratulate the other nominees, and thank them for losing. We have loved playing this music across the country. We've tried to bring humor and really entertain the audiences. All the Steep Canyon Rangers are hard-working musicians and hard-working entertainers." The Hollywood star has recorded two albums in the past -- The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo and Rare Bird Alert -- and has been moonlighting as a bluegrass musician for most of the summer. After accepting his award he commented, "I've been playing banjo for 50 years, but performing in a band, I've done it for about two years. I got very, very lucky with the Steep Canyon Rangers. We created a show from scratch, took it around and worked on it, worked very hard. I had to learn to become a band musician. The hardest part was talking and tuning."
He will spend the next couple of months touring and has referred to the bluegrass community as "the nicest people I've ever met." The same could be said of himself of course. Congrats Steve -- you deserve it!
