Pop star-turned-fashion icon Victoria Beckham jetted to South Africa on Sunday (23Feb14) to lend her support to a new health initiative to prevent the spread of HIV. The designer teamed up with officials from Born Free, a charity which aims to end the transmission of HIV from mothers to their kids, and spent time with medics at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in Cape Town to educate herself and witness their efforts in providing treatment for sufferers of the disease first-hand.
She was also given a tour of the Delft Community Health Centre, where she spoke to staff about their work to combat the AIDS/HIV epidemic, and on Monday (24Feb14), Beckham headed to the Children's Infection Disease Clinical Research Unit at the city's Tygerberg Hospital to meet with young patients, including a little girl named Esmonic.
Her representative tells the DailyMail.co.uk of the charity visit, "It was a whirlwind trip, however Victoria was inspired and motivated by the wonderful people she met and will continue her support to help raise awareness of the objective to end mother to child transmission of HIV."
British actress Kelly Brook has ended her whirlwind romance with model boyfriend David Mcintosh. Brook met McIntosh, a former star of British TV show Gladiators, at a New Year's Eve (31Dec13) party, but she has called it off less two months into the romance.
On Tuesday (17Feb14), Brook hinted at the split by posting a cryptic message on her Instagram.com page, along with the caption, "Keep your Intentions pure."
McIntosh has now reportedly confirmed the split news to Britain's Daily Star newspaper, saying, "I thought we'd clicked. I thought we were having a lot of fun. I didn't ever want to jinx it by saying or doing too much. We were taking things slowly. I would've liked things to develop further because I do like her."
Brook most recently dated former rugby players Danny Cipriani and Thom Evans.
Lindsay Lohan's future stepmother Kate Major has apologised for falsely accusing the actress' dad Michael of threatening her with a knife following a dispute at the couple's Florida home on Monday (17Feb14). Police were called to their Boca Raton property late on Monday to investigate reports of a domestic disturbance and Major raised fears for her safety and that of their young son Landon after posting a series of headline-grabbing accusations on Twitter.com as the fight escalated.
In the worrying tweets, Major claimed Michael Lohan had a knife and was trying to take their one-year-old baby away from her - but he challenged the claims with his own version of events on his Twitter page, insisting he was the one who had called the emergency services, adding, "All I want is for her (Major) to get help so she can be there for our wonderful son. Maybe this will do it."
Now Major has publicly retracted her allegations, blaming fear for prompting her to lie about the seriousness of the situation.
In a statement issued to UsMagazine.com, she writes, "I regretfully tweeted while my emotions were high that I was being threatened by Michael with a knife; this was not the case.
"I made a lot of statements on Twitter that were merely out of fear that he was going to take my son from me. Please respect our privacy through this difficult time."
Major has since deleted the false accusations from her Twitter page, and she has since returned to the blog to declare: "I love Landon & nothing will ever change that or take that from me!!!! I should not have tweeted anything. This has all turned into a whirlwind. I'm sorry."
The embattled couple became engaged in 2010. Lohan divorced Lindsay's mother Dina in 2007.

Kim Kardashian's sister Khloe has been seen crying on camera as her marriage to basketball player Lamar Odom broke down during filming of the family's reality TV show. Khloe Kardashian filed for divorce from the troubled sportsman in December (13) after months of rumours about the state of their relationship and suggestions Odom was battling a drug problem.
The reality TV star, who cited irreconcilable differences for the end of the four-year union, has remained silent on the subject of her marriage troubles in recent months, but her problems were laid bare in the latest episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, which aired in the U.S. on Sunday night (19Jan14).
Kardashian was seen crying on camera as she talked about her troubles, revealing she was struggling to help her now-estranged husband, telling her sister Kourtney, "I have been putting myself aside to hopefully save somebody's life, and now that I have come to terms that I can't I have to move on with my life and that means like changing a lot. I shouldn't care what people think but I do not like that now I am affiliated. I haven't even had a week off, I need to get my life in order, but I love to work as it distracts me, but I go home and I'm a shattered person."
She added of her decision not to talk about Odom's troubles: "My priority is Lamar's health and well-being and I don't feel it is my place to address a lot of things, as it is not. It is part of my job to protect him and keep him as safe as possible and keeping him safe is by me keeping quiet."
The former couple wed in 2009 following a whirlwind romance.
Man Of Steel hunk Henry Cavill has sealed his reunion with mixed martial artist-turned-actress Gina Carano by adding a puppy to their family. The couple began dating in September, 2012, but split early last year (13).
Cavill went on to enjoy a brief summer (13) fling with The Big Bang Theory beauty Kaley Cuoco, before reigniting his romance with Fast & Furious 6 star Carano last autumn (13), and now it appears they are thinking long-term after becoming parents to an Akita pooch from Arkansas breeder Big Bear Akitas.
Representatives from the company shared a photo of the British hunk cuddling his new dog on their official website, alongside the caption, "We are proud to announce the newest members of the Big Bear family! Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Gina Carano (Fast and Furious 6) are the proud owners of a Big Bear Akita.
"It was so great working with Henry and getting to meet him as well as Gina was truly a treat. Both Henry and Gina are genuine and a joy to be around. It was truly an honor to add them to our extended family and thank them for their patience in meeting us and our children. It's not everyday that an A-list celebrity, much less 2 celebrities come to Beebe, AR to visit."
Meanwhile, Cuoco has also moved on - she married tennis player Ryan Sweeting on New Year's Eve (31Dec13) after a whirlwind romance.
Irish actor Colin Farrell has a new stepfather in his life after his mother found love again in her 70s. The Phone Booth star reveals his mum Rita is a newlywed after deciding to tie the knot with a man called Joe following a whirlwind romance.
He tells U.S. talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, "She found herself a really good man... They got married six months ago.
"We threw her a wedding. A wedding was thrown in the back garden, so it wasn't very far...
"(They took) the fast track to love. They met... a little over a year ago, and they lived in sin for six months (before marrying)."
Farrell insists he has nothing but love for the new addition to his family, but he couldn't help but have a little fun with the 74 year old before giving Rita and Joe his seal of approval.
The 37 year old says, "I met him and vetted him and asked him what his intentions were... what his future was looking like... we've all got a future! He's a wonderful, wonderful man."
Rita was previously married to the actor's father, Irish soccer player Eamon Farrell.
Florida Georgia Line star Brian Kelley has wed his girlfriend Brittney Marie Cole. The Cruise hitmaker exchanged vows with Cole in a low-key sunset ceremony at his new property in Nashville, Tennessee on Monday (16Dec13) in front of 40 guests, including his fellow Florida Georgia Line singer Tyler Hubbard and their bandmates.
Kelley's secret wedding took place just seven months after he began dating the 23-year-old University of Georgia student.
The groom tells People magazine, "The whole process has been non-traditional. There was no official proposal or exchanging of rings. We had just fallen in love, and I knew I couldn't live without her. It sounds like a terrible cheesy movie, but when you know, you know!
"The first day we hung out, we just knew that it was something real. I'd never wanted to make someone my wife before. I always want her by my side."
The newlyweds are now planning on heading somewhere tropical for their honeymoon, and while they do have plans to start a family in the future, the band's breakout success has put the idea of kids on hold.
Kelley explains, "One day for sure (we'll have children), but it's too crazy with everything going on right now. We're enjoying being with each other. It's a beautiful love story. It really is."
Kelley and Hubbard have had a whirlwind year thanks to their hit song Cruise, and recently took home Single of the Year at both the Country Music Association Awards and the American Music Awards.
Kim Kardashian's sister Khloe has called time on her troubled marriage to sportsman Lamar Odom by filing for divorce. The reality TV star, who has been estranged from the basketball player for months, filed documents to end the union and restore her maiden name on Friday (13Dec13).
Khloe has cited irreconcilable differences for the split.
The proceedings are expected to be very straightforward as both parties signed a pre-nuptial agreement.
Kardashian will be represented by top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser.
The couple wed in 2009 following a whirlwind romance, but things haven't been happy at home for years, according to reports suggesting Lamar's substance-abuse issues, which led to a DUI arrest in August (13) and a stint in rehab, put a strain on the marriage.
There was a clear indication that Kardashian was planning to end the marriage at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Breakfast in Beverly Hills on Wednesday (11Dec13), when she arrived without her wedding ring.
Warning: This review doesn’t reveal any specific spoilers, but it does discuss a major element of the film. Proceed with caution.
Deceit is the name of the game in director/screenwriter Neil LaBute’s indie Some Velvet Morning. Not only does the production masquerade as a film when many would call it a play – the set is contained and the cast only includes Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve – but it also puts the audience through some classic LaBute mind games. (If you know LaBute’s work – The Wicker Man and The Shape of Things – then you’re familiar with his attraction to plots that aren’t always as they seem.) But whether the audience is okay with being manipulated or not, both the dialogue and the well-written characters, which are strongly executed by Tucci and Eve, make the tumultuous ride through LaBute’s world worth the deceit.
Set entirely in Velvet’s (Eve) suspiciously well-decorated and expansive two-level brownstone, the story follows a middle-aged man named Fred (Tucci) who has left his wife in the hopes of reuniting with his 20-or-30-something ex-lover. Unfortunately, Fred fails to let Velvet know that he’s coming to visit and, based on the number of suitcases he’s brought with him, that he’s planning on staying for quite a while. What results is the pair matching up against each other in a vindictive and sexually-charged back-and-forth dialogue duel that lasts the entirety of the film.
The conversation – which looks more like a game of chess between two skilled players – revolves around the conflict of Fred wanting to be with Velvet, and Velvet not wanting anything to do with Fred. However, his sociopathic and narcissistic tendencies lead him to believe he deserves to have her and, more importantly, have sex with her. Tucci flawlessly embodies the entitled demeanor and bitter attitude of a man who can’t have what he wants, and we watch as he attempts to control a soft-spoken and collected Eve who, while at first seems to be the victim, quickly shows herself to be quite the competitor. So what about their volatile, anger-infused, twisted, and cruelly sexual relationship keeps us so utterly absorbed in it? The vagueness of it all. The anger that Fred emits and the underlying threat behind each sentence he utters makes us wonder why we don’t want to jump in and defend Velvet. By the books, Velvet is the victim. But there’s this unspoken sense of apathy that falls of off her as she resolutely struts through her home, evidently unaffected by the man who is refusing to leave her home, which makes us feel that there's something we’re not being told. We want to stick around and solve the puzzle that LaBute has set before us. And because LaBute has his trademark shtick, there is of course a surprise ending that throws us through a whirlwind of emotions – emotions that some people will appreciate while others will not.
Deception aside, where the film will falter for some is the fact that it doesn’t seem like a film at all. If we take a closer look at its core elements, it seems like it would be better suited for the stage, which isn’t a far-fetched idea considering the director’s long history with theater. While LaBute does a fine job of navigating the space that he has allotted himself by moving the actors throughout the house in a fluid pace, it still doesn’t hide the fact we’re watching two people hold a conversation in a constrained, almost claustrophobic, space for almost two hours.
But in the end, whether you think it’s a play or film, or whether the ending makes you want to hurl your popcorn at the screen in anger or calmly say, “You got me, LaBute,” in satisfying defeat, he has done his job: He’s made us react to Some Velvet Morning. Yes, he most definitely pulled the rug out from under us, but hey, we’re the ones that decided to watch a LaBute production in the first place. We’ve all been duped, and now Labute is smugly smiling in the corner while he watches his work at play.
