Since moviegoers have yet to figure out what planet Garry Shandling is from, the comic will return to the small screen as host of the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, it has been announced. The ABC telecast is set for Sept. 10. (Nominations are due out July 20.)
Shandling, late of a couple of fizzled big-screen appearances (i.e. "What Planet Are You From?"), last worked on the tube in HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" (1992-98).
For the uninitiated, the Emmys, in theory, honor primetime's finest; and, in practice, honor cop and lawyer shows as produced by Steven ("NYPD Blue") Bochco and David E. ("Ally McBeal") Kelley.
A weekly series starring Garry Shandling as himself in an interactive comedy that involves the audience, both at home and in the studio. The comedian takes on relationships, friends, work, and other afflictions of contemporary life.
