Troubled rapper Gucci Mane has spent 10 years battling an addiction to cough syrup and has finally admitted he needs to go to rehab. The hip-hop star's erratic behaviour has hit headlines over the last few weeks, and he was most recently arrested in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month (Sep13) after an associate allegedly called cops and voiced concerns about the rapper's antics.
Mane, real name Radric Davis, was detained after allegedly threatening officers, who claimed to have found him in possession of a gun and a small amount of marijuana, and he has now issued a statement revealing he has been struggling with an addiction to prescription cough syrup, which is mixed with soft drinks and nicknamed "lean" or "purple drank".
The 33 year old, who remains in custody, insists he is now ready to seek help and hopes to start a rehab stint soon.
In the statement, posted to his Twitter.com account, he says, "Woke up the other day out this hospital bed & I'm so embarrassed & ashamed of my behaviour that was brought to my attention. I just wanna man up right now & take this time to apologise to my family, friends, the industry & most of all my fans. I'm sorry! I've been drinking lean for 10 plus years & I must admit it has destroyed me. I wanna be the first rapper to admit I'm addicted to lean & that s**t ain't no joke (sic). I can barely remember all the things I've done & said. However there's no excuse.
"I'm currently incarcerated but I will be going to rehab because I need help. I wanna thank everyone that has stood by me during this difficult time. Please keep me in your prayers."
Gucci Mane also issued an apology to stars including Drake, Rick Ross and Bryan 'Birdman' Williams, who he recently blasted in a bizarre Twitter rant, adding, "I wanna personally apologise to BirdMan, Ross & Drake.... I 100 Per Cent Regret My Words & Actions."
Rapper Nicki Minaj was also targeted in Gucci Mane's Twitter meltdown and she subsequently urged the star to seek professional help, writing in a post on the social networking website, "I'm praying 4 (for) him. 4real (sic). He's sick and in dire need of rehab."
Nicki Minaj has urged fellow rapper Gucci Mane to seek help in rehab after he embarked on a Twitter.com rant on Monday (09Sep13) and alleged that he had slept with the Starships hitmaker. Mane used the social networking blog to lash out at his label bosses at Atlantic Records and a slew of stars, including Drake and Waka Flocka Flame, while he also boasted about his alleged sexual exploits with Minaj and R&B beauty Ciara.
Minaj was quick to shoot down his claims, tweeting, "May God strike me dead if I ever had sex wit that man... N**ga da way ya (sic) ugliness is set up... crackhead. Jesus strike me dead right now if I ever had sex with this animal."
She later revealed she had received an apology from Mane and shared her concerns for his wellbeing with her fans.
She wrote, "Ok Gee (Gucci Mane) called me... that was fun tho (though) I'm praying 4 (for) him. 4real (sic). He's sick and in dire need of rehab. Love".
Mane's Twitter tirade comes amid unconfirmed reports the rapper has been dropped from Atlantic Records. He is no longer listed on the label's roster on its official website.
The embattled hip-hop star, real name Radric Davis, has been dogged by legal troubles for years - he walked free from his most recent jail stint in May (13) following an arrest for an alleged probation violation. He is also due to stand trial later this year (13) over allegations he hit a soldier over the head with a bottle in an Atlanta, Georgia nightclub in March (13). Mane has pleaded not guilty.
