Forest Whitaker and Jon Voight were among the stars who turned out to help Italian actress Sophia Loren mark her 80th birthday at an exhibition in Mexico celebrating her life and career. The Oscar winner is the focus of a show at the Museo Soumaya, a private museum in Mexico City, and her Hollywood friends turned out for a red carpet gala there on Saturday (20Sep14), the day she reached the milestone.
Whitaker and Voight were among the guests at the glittering event, along with U.S. TV host Larry King and actor Andy Garcia, according to the New York Daily News.
The exhibit, titled Sophia Loren: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, features Loren's belongings and awards including her Oscar statuette, and it officially opens to the public on Monday (22Sep14).
British singer Sam Smith cancelled a gig in Toronto, Canada on Sunday (21Sep14) because he is suffering from tonsillitis.
The Stay With Me hitmaker was struck by the throat condition over the weekend (20-21Sep14), less than a week into the North American leg of his tour, and he axed the concert at Kool Haus in Toronto as he was unable to speak.
Smith apologised in a post on Instagram.com, writing, "Toronto, I am so unbelievably sorry but I'm going to have to cancel tonight's show. I woke up yesterday morning with tonsillitis and I didn't speak all day and all night in hopes it would clear and I'd be able to perform for you all tonight. It's worse and I can't speak. I'm so upset and will reschedule the show as soon as possible. I'm sorry."
The singer is scheduled to perform in Chicago, Illinois on Monday (22Sep14), but it is not known if this date will go ahead.
Italian actress Sophia Loren is spending the days leading up to her 80th birthday promoting an art gallery in Mexico celebrating her career. The Oscar winner's most prized possessions including a wardrobe, awards, and books, are on display in an exhibit called Sophia Loren: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow at the Soumaya Museum in Mexico City.
Loren was on hand to open the gallery on Thursday (18Sep14), and was humbled by the extensive collection, which celebrates her entire career in show business.
She told the crowd at the news conference, "This is not a celebration of the past but the prologue of a beautiful life that has given me a lot... I'm very moved by this, it's a beautiful exhibit."
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, owner of the Soumaya, approached Loren with the idea for the exhibit two years ago, and now fans can view treasures from her personal and professional life, including original screenplays from her films, portraits of the actress, as well as her Best Actress Academy Award for Italian war drama Two Women.
As she unveiled the golden statue, Loren recalled the moment she received the coveted trophy, and said, "One feels out of this world, it's like falling in love."
A red carpet gala will be held at the museum on Saturday (20Sep14) on Loren's 80th birthday, and the exhibit will officially open to the public on 22 September (14).
U.S. radio shock jock Howard Stern was hesitant to give a eulogy for late friend Joan Rivers as he was convinced he was the wrong man for the job. The America's Got Talent judge was among the many stars who attended the veteran comedienne's glamorous New York City funeral on Sunday (07Sun14), days after she died after suffering a cardiac and respiratory arrest during a routine throat operation.
During his daily radio show on SiriusXM on Monday (08Sep14), Stern admitted he wasn't sure he could deliver a proper eulogy for the beloved funnywoman.
He explained, "To be at her funeral yesterday was really probably the most remarkable service I have ever been witnessed to... I got there early because I had gotten a call from (Joan's daughter) Melissa like a day and a half before the service, asking me if I would speak. I said to her, 'Melissa you're asking the wrong guy.'
"But I said. 'I'll do it I will do anything for Joan, I'll do anything for you (Melissa).'"
With only a day to prepare, Stern sought out the help of fellow comedian Louis C.K. for advice on the speech, and said, "I was in touch with Louis C.K. and he'd written me and he said, 'You know, Joan really deserves a great sendoff because of her impact.'
"He said something very profound: 'Joan was like an aunt or a best friend who could make everything better. And even in times... after lets just say 9/11 or the country just seems to be going downhill or things just seem to be bad... she would crack a joke, and you know this is true, when she would crack a joke, you didn't feel so alone. You felt like we were all together and you felt like oh maybe things aren't so bad.'"
He continued, "Louis said probably the loneliness and the unhappiness of life - what else could ease that despair than a great comedian? That's what great comedians do. Great comedians have the ability to snap you out of this sadness, this loneliness...to set it all right again and she was really really a top pro."
Stern also admitted he shed some tears at the touching service thanks to Hugh Jackman, who honoured Rivers' memory with a rendition of Peter Allen song, Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage.
Stern said, "He starts singing it quietly and part of the song is clap your hands together. He made everyone get up and start clapping their hands to the song. I was so f**king moved by this guys performance. I had tears. Now, you know me. I'm a big scumbag. I don't get moved. I appreciated this guy so much. Hugh Jackman. You know f**king Wolverine."
Australia's The X Factor has been jeopardised by an influenza outbreak on set which has affected both the celebrity judges and the contestants. Cases of flu have broken out during filming of the TV talent show in Melbourne, and star judge Dannii Minogue was among the victims.
The singer was so ill, she had to skip several days filming last week (ends17Aug14), according to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, while her co-star Redfoo has also fallen sick.
The illness is also affecting the contestants, with a number of acts including boy band Younger Than Yesterday battling poor health while performing on the show.
Veteran musician Wilko Johnson is plotting a return to hit TV show Game Of Thrones after he recovers from cancer surgery.
The former Dr. Feelgood star appeared in the fantasy show as executioner Ser Ilyn Payne and he was last seen on screen in 2011, two years before he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Johnson defied doctors to continue working after his health news, and he is determined to bounce back after undergoing an operation in April (14) to remove a tumour from his pancreas.
His journalist friend Charles Shaar Murray has given an update on the star's condition, revealing he enjoyed an outing to the beach with a group of friends on Sunday (17Aug14) and is even eyeing a return to TV.
Murray writes in a post on Facebook.com, "Yesterday: a lovely Sunday afternoon by the seaside... to be precise, hanging out with Wilko Johnson and a bunch of his mates... Wilk's still in the comparatively early stages of recovery from his massive life-saving surgery, but he's in good spirits (though he's no longer drinking any), working hard to rebuild strength and stamina, itching to resume maltreating Telecasters (guitars) in public and even speculating on returning to Game of Thrones once Ser Ilyn Payne is no longer ill in pain and he's strong enough to wield the Big Sword once more. And he thanks all y'all for the good vibes."
The note was reposted on Johnson's own account with the message, "We just had to share this heartening update from the inimitable Charles Shaar Murray. As you can imagine, Wilko's still got a long way to go, but he's in good spirits and we must reiterate CSM's last line - he really does appreciate all the positive vibes."
Singer/actress Hilary Duff insists she is still in good spirits after her new single leaked online before its official unveiling.
The So Yesterday hitmaker is gearing up for her highly-anticipated comeback to the music scene and was slated to premiere her new track, All About You, on U.S. radio programme the Adam Bomb Show on Monday night (11Aug14).
However, eager fans got hold of the song before its official debut, and instead of becoming furious, Duff has taken the leak in stride. She took to Twitter.com to write, "Guess #AllAboutYou leaked... Dammit all! lol I am excited y'all are loving it! Don't forget to get your own tonight @iTunesMusic please."
Duff, who previewed a clip of the song while presenting at the Teen Choice Awards the evening before (10Aug14), is due to release her first studio album in seven years this autumn (14).

Robert Kardashian made headlines yesterday when his sisters Kim and Khloé came to his defense over comments ex-girlfriend Adrienne Bailon made about him in a new interview.
It looks like all of that drama may have somehow led him to Nicki Minaj's always-entertaining Twitter account, and the two exchanged some really adorable tweets. It all started when Nicki sent out some love to her fans, and Rob responded:
U guys give me so much life. Thank you.

Singer/actress Ariana Grande is nursing a broken heart after her beloved grandfather died on Tuesday (22Jul14). The Problem hitmaker's maternal granddad was hospitalised with a mystery ailment earlier this month (Jul14), prompting the star to cancel an Independence Day (04Jul14) performance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to be by his hospital bedside in Florida.
However, his health continued to deteriorate and he passed away on Tuesday.
Grande, who had to fly to New York immediately after his death to prepare for an early morning TV appearance, took to her Twitter.com blog on Wednesday morning (23Jul14) to share her heartbreak with fans and thank them for their ongoing support.
In a series of posts, she wrote, "thank you for your continuous love & light over the past few weeks... we did lose my favorite person to ever exist yesterday, my grandpa
"if only y'all knew how amazing he was.. my (heart) hurts so much. It's beyond broken but I got to hold his hand and watch him find his peace... this is the hardest thing imaginable but I'm so grateful that I got to spend this time with him & my family. taking care of him & loving him... we thank you so much for the continuous love".
She admits she stayed up all night crying as her best friends comforted her, adding, "only reason I made this twelve hour trip (to New York) is grandps (sic) told me he wanted me to always be professional & fulfill (sic) my business commitments."
Grande also reveals her half-brother Frankie is unaware of the family death as he is currently competing on U.S. reality show Big Brother - and it was her grandfather's last wish to make sure the aspiring actor/dancer did not lose on his account.
She writes, "asked grandps last week if he wanted us to pull frankie off bb & he said 'no way! he's gotta play the game even tho (though) i don't understand it'."
