Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was awarded France's top cultural honour during a ceremony in his native India on Tuesday (01Jul14). The actor was presented with the Legion of Honour medal by Laurent Fabius, France's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai to recognise his contribution to promoting cultural diversity across the world.
The moment was extra poignant for the star, as the day would have marked his late mother's birthday.
He said at the ceremony, "It's my mother's birthday. If she was alive, apart from being extremely old, she would have been extremely happy that her son has got the highest and the most prestigious honour in the world... so thank you on behalf of my mother."
He added, "I thank the President of France Mr. Francois Hollande and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development of France, Mr. Laurent Fabius, for finding me fitting for this honour... This honour has further motivated me to take Indian Cinema to the next level of acceptance, love and glory. And thank you France for being so loving and appreciative of Indian films, it's extremely encouraging."
Music legend Lou Reed left an estate worth in excess of $30 million (£18.8 million) to his family, according to a U.S. report. The veteran rocker died in October (13) at the age of 71 after a battle with liver disease, and court documents seen by editors of the New York Post show Reed's longtime manager, Robert Gotterer, has documented around $20 million (£12.5 million) in "money and other property" in his role as estate executor.
The sum reportedly does not include another $10 million (£6.3 million) which has been earmarked for Reed's heirs, as well as insurance policies and pension funds.
The Perfect Day star left his wife Laurie Anderson two homes, a $7 million (£4.4 million) penthouse in New York City, and a $1.5 million (£937,500) house in the Hamptons, as well as jewellery, art, cars and boats.
Reed also asked for $500,000 (£312,500) to be allocated for his elderly mother's care, while his sister Margaret Reed Weiner is set to receive $5 million (£3.1 million).
Actress Olivia Wilde's Mother's Day dreams turned into a nightmare as she found herself hunting for an available restroom in Central Park on one of the hottest and busiest days of the year. The Tron: Legacy star was hoping the May (14) day would be quiet and enjoyable, but her plan to have a nice brunch and a walk in the park with fiance Jason Sudeikis and son Otis was ruined by soaring temperatures and the Japan Day celebration in New York.
She says, "We go up there (to Central Park) and it's hell... Everybody in the world is in Central Park that day. It also happened to be Japan Day, which it turns out is a huge deal in New York City...There were a billion people there and there's one bathroom, as far as I can tell... It was a bad decision on my part.
"We were sweating, and angry and hungry. Everyone had to pee. I finally just dropped to the ground on a patch of dirt, like in between two ugly roads, and then just ripped off the diaper of the kid to change him and he just pooped everywhere - like a torrent, a flood."
Justin Bieber's tour assistant has been handed 12 months probation after pleading guilty to two charges of attempting to import border-controlled drugs into Australia. Terrence Reche Smalls made the plea by phone during a court hearing in Brisbane on Friday (13Jun14), and he was given a 12-month good behaviour bond.
He was told he will face a hefty fine if he breaches the deal.
Smalls was reportedly caught in possession of cannabis plant material and resin when he was stopped at an airport in Brisbane last year (Nov13), while on tour with Bieber and his entourage.
He initially claimed to have no knowledge of the drugs, but has since accepted responsibility for packing it in his luggage.
The news comes a day after Bieber learned a felony phone stealing charge against him has been passed back to the Los Angeles City Attorney after police officials failed to find evidence to take the matter further.
The singer was accused of taking a mother's cellphone after spotting her trying to take a photo of him during a visit to an amusement park in Sherman Oaks, California last month (May14).
Los Angeles police officials investigated the woman's allegations, and interviewed witnesses but no one saw the Baby singer grab her phone from her handbag - as she claimed.
As a result, District Attorney's officials have rejected felony prosecution and sent the case to the City Attorney.
"The call came out of nowhere. I got on the phone and he said, 'Spike, I admire your work. Will you do this (video) for me?' and I said, 'Yeah! Let's do it!'... This (music video) was like a peace offering, so to drop it on Mother's Day was brilliance. They didn't tell me that (they were going to release it that day)." Model/actress Jenny Mccarthy is under fire after posting a joke about transgender people online while poking fun at a scandal surrounding Jennifer Lopez's boyfriend Casper Smart.
The On the Floor hitmaker's dancer beau has been at the centre of controversy after reportedly cheating on his superstar girlfriend with a transgender bikini model. On Tuesday (03Jun14), McCarthy decided to weigh in on the rumours, and took to Twitter.com to write, "Did Jennifer Lopez's boyfriend cheat on her with a transsexual model? I heard JLo gave him an ultimatum: 'it's either me or her/him'"
The TV personality soon deleted the tweet after receiving a barrage of responses criticising her for the joke. Author Kelly Oxford wrote, "Hey @JennyMcCarthy your last tweet was really transphobic. I'm a 'learn and be better' type, so I thought I'd let you know. PEACE."
McCarthy has yet to comment on the furore.
British model/actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was deeply shocked by the extreme poverty she witnessed during a charity visit to slum towns in Cambodia. The Transformers: Dark of the Moon star visited the Southeast Asian country's capital Phnom Penh in April (14) for her first trip with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
She met residents of the city's most impoverished communities, and was horrified by the conditions they deal with day-to-day.
In an article for British Vogue magazine, she writes, "The slums around Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, are crammed with children running around without shoes. They live in the most basic conditions, surrounded by dirt, rubbish and sewage in searing 37 degree (Celsius) heat. There's limited access to clean water, medicine and food. Every day is about survival for these children. It was shocking and sad to see."
Huntington-Whiteley was also moved by the story of a mother whose child fell ill and died after filthy water and sewage flooded their home during the rainy season.
She adds, "Losing your precious baby girl is no less painful when you live in a slum than if you live in a big city like London or Los Angeles. A mother's broken heart is a mother's broken heart."
The trip was filmed as part of U.K. TV channel ITV's Soccer Aid fundraising telethon, which will air in Britain on 8 June (14).
Troubled pop star Justin Bieber has responded to allegations he attempted to take a mother's camera phone from her after catching her allegedly trying to take shots of him at a California arcade park, confessing it's "hard to defend myself and my privacy". On Monday (12May14), a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman confirmed a complaint was made about the Baby hitmaker in connection with an incident at Sherman Oaks Castle Park, where Bieber and his entourage were playing miniature golf.
According to TMZ.com, the singer allegedly snatched the woman's phone after accusing her of trying to take pictures of him.
And while no official charges have been made against Bieber, he took to Twitter.com on Wednesday (14May14) to deny his involvement in the incident.
He wrote, "It is hard to defend myself and my privacy every moment of the day. Then to see rumors. The truth will set u free. My mom raised me to be kind to others. I get judged, harassed, and I try to take the high road. Sometimes it isn’t easy. But we keep trying.
"I will continue to be the man my mother raised. I love people and I will try to be kind even when things are not fair. Don’t believe rumors. Thanks for those who stick by me and those that help me grow everyday. I love you. Off to have fun and smile with friends. I’m human. I feel. I hurt. But I got thick skin too. I can handle it. I love you.”
Bieber is already facing a slew of legal issues - he faces a DUI trial in Florida in July (14), and he is also facing prosecution in connection with the alleged assault of a limousine driver in Toronto, Canada last year (13).
Country music star Holly Williams is set to become a first-time mum. The singer, who is the granddaughter of music legend Hank Williams, and her husband Chris Coleman are preparing to add another member to the famous family this October (14).
Williams fittingly took to Twitter.com on Mother's Day in America (11May14) to share the good news, posting a photo of herself aiming a rifle while showing off her growing baby bump.
The accompanying caption read:, "@colemantime (husband) caught this of me while shooting tin cans this morning on the Georgia farm. I think I felt my first kick and I’m not talking about the Red Ryder BB gun!!"
Williams wed drummer Coleman, who tours with Kings of Leon, in 2009.
She tells People.com that she didn't expect to fall pregnant so quickly after she and her husband decided to start a family.
She explains, "I’ve had so many friends who’ve struggled with infertility issues, so I thought, 'Well, this could take five years'. And it didn’t at all! We felt really blessed. It was like the Lord gave us this little miracle."
Williams, who is outspoken country star Hank Williams, Jr's daughter, is due on 9 October (14).
