For the bulk of every Rocky and Bullwinkle episode, moose and squirrel would engage in high concept escapades that satirized geopolitics, contemporary cinema, and the very fabrics of the human condition. With all of that to work with, there's no excuse for why the pair and their Soviet nemeses haven't gotten a decent movie adaptation. But the ingenious Mr. Peabody and his faithful boy Sherman are another story, intercut between Rocky and Bullwinkle segments to teach kids brief history lessons and toss in a nearly lethal dose of puns. Their stories and relationship were much simpler, which means that bringing their shtick to the big screen would entail a lot more invention — always risky when you're dealing with precious material.
For the most part, Mr. Peabody & Sherman handles the regeneration of its heroes aptly, allowing for emotionally substance in their unique father-son relationship and all the difficulties inherent therein. The story is no subtle metaphor for the difficulties surrounding gay adoption, with society decreeing that a dog, no matter how hyper-intelligent, cannot be a suitable father. The central plot has Peabody hosting a party for a disapproving child services agent and the parents of a young girl with whom 7-year-old Sherman had a schoolyard spat, all in order to prove himself a suitable dad. Of course, the WABAC comes into play when the tots take it for a spin, forcing Peabody to rush to their rescue.
Getting down to personals, we also see the left brain-heavy Peabody struggle with being father Sherman deserves. The bulk of the emotional marks are hit as we learn just how much Peabody cares for Sherman, and just how hard it has been to accept that his only family is growing up and changing.
But more successful than the new is the film's handling of the old — the material that Peabody and Sherman purists will adore. They travel back in time via the WABAC Machine to Ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, and the Trojan War, and 18th Century France, explaining the cultural backdrop and historical significance of the settings and characters they happen upon, all with that irreverent (but no longer racist) flare that the old cartoons enjoyed. And oh... the puns.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a f**king treasure trove of some of the most amazingly bad puns in recent cinema. This effort alone will leave you in awe.
The film does unravel in its final act, bringing the science-fiction of time travel a little too close to the forefront and dropping the ball on a good deal of its emotional groundwork. What seemed to be substantial building blocks do not pay off in the way we might, as scholars of animated family cinema, have anticipated, leaving the movie with an unfinished feeling.
But all in all, it's a bright, compassionate, reasonably educational, and occasionally funny if not altogether worthy tribute to an old favorite. And since we don't have our own WABAC machine to return to a time of regularly scheduled Peabody and Sherman cartoons, this will do okay for now.
If nothing else, it's worth your time for the puns.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sutton Foster took the stage together. No, they haven't teamed up for a Broadway show, a new television series, or a Modern Family/Bunheads crossover (which would be awesome). But the theater-loving stars came together Tuesday to announce the nominations for the 2013 Tony Awards. (They are the hosts for this year's show, after all, so it only made sense that these two would have the honors of making the big announcement.)

Showtime's 2013 “will be about momentum and growth,” announced the network’s president of entertainment, David Nevins, at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Thanks to watercooler shows like Homeland and Dexter, the premium cable network ended 2012 with an all-time high of more than 22 million subscribers. Nevins revealed that Showtime is the only pay-for-programming cable network to show consistent growth, mainly due to its “cutting edge, topical, and entertaining programming.” That shouldn't change as we head into 2013: Here's what Nevins had to say about the return dates and details of all your favorite shows.
The Big C: hereafter: The final chapter will conclude with a four-part limited event season beginning Monday, April 29 (10 p.m.). Golden Globe award-winning and Emmy-nominated actress Laura Linney will reprise her role as cancer-battler Cathy Jamison. Showrunner Jenny Bicks says that the series’ end will be a rewarding one. “I would say that the final scenes of the series will be nostalgic for viewers of the show,” she said.
The Borgias: Showtime’s Jeremy Irons-starring period piece about Pope Alexander will return for its third season on Sunday, April 14 (10 p.m.).
Californication: Season six premieres Sunday, Jan. 13 (10:30 p.m.).
Dexter: America’s favorite serial killer returns for his eighth and final season a bit earlier in the schedule this year: Dexter will premiere in the summer — Sunday, June 30 (9 PM) to be exact — and promises to have a “clear end-game.” But when pressed for more details, Nevins wouldn’t reveal any more teasers.
Episodes: The 30-minute comedy will return “fairly early in 2014.” Nevins said if if could he would air the show as soon as possible, but Showtime agreed to produce the show on the creators’ availability and as a result location has been split between London and Los Angeles.
Homeland: Season Three of the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning drama series will premiere this fall on Sunday, Sept. 29 (9 p.m.).
House of Lies: Marty, Jeannie, and the rest of the gang are back to lie their way to the top on Sunday, Jan. 13 (10 p.m.). Fun fact: Don Cheadle's Oceans 11 costar Matt Damon will guest star as himself later this season when he asks the team to help him appear more charitable than George Clooney.
Inside Comedy: The second season of the critically acclaimed documentary series premieres Monday, Feb. 11 (11 p.m.). The ten half-hour episodes will feature David Steinberg and a line-up of comedy A-listers including Louis C.K., Steve Martin, Tina Fey, and Will Ferrell.
Masters of Sex: Audiences will be introduced to Showtime’s newest drama series starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan following Homeland on Sept. 29 (10 p.m.). Nevins said Masters of Sex is already earning “tremendous early buzz.”
Nurse Jackie: Fans of Edie Falco will see the Emmy award winner return to her drug addicted ways on Sunday April 14 (9 p.m.).
Penny Dreadful: With “incredibly exciting and original scripts,” Penny Dreadful is a psychosexual horror series created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator). The pre-production series will center on some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – together in Victorian London. Production will begin in London later this year.
Ray Donovan: Dexter’s final season will serve as the springboard for Ray Donovan, the highly anticipated new drama series. Nevins said that the show boasts “phenomenal” writing and an incredible cast, and debuts on June 30 (10 p.m.).
Shameless: Showtime’s third-highest-rated show will return to TV screens Sunday, Jan 13 (9 p.m.).
Web Therapy: Although no specific date has been set, Lisa Kudrow’s quirky comedy will return “this summer, roughly the same time it was on this last year,” Nevins says. He promises the new season will exceed its predecessors and there are “enormous guest stars” who are always eager to take part.

Robert Zemeckis is a blockbuster director at heart. Action has never been an issue for the man behind Back to the Future. When he puts aside the high concept adventures for emotional human stories — think Forrest Gump or Cast Away — he still goes big. His latest Flight continues the trend revolving the story of one man's fight with alcoholism around a terrifying plane crash. Zemeckis expertly crafts his roaring centerpiece and while he finds an agile performer in Denzel Washington the hour-and-a-half of Flight after the shocking moment can't sustain the power. The "big" works. The intimate drowns.
Washington stars as Whip Whitaker a reckless airline pilot who balances his days flying jumbo jets with picking up women snorting lines of cocaine and drinking himself to sleep. Although drunk for the flight that will change his life forever that's not the reason the plane goes down — in fact it may be the reason he thinks up his savvy landing solution in the first place. Writer John Gatins follows Whitaker into the aftermath madness: an investigation of what really happened during the flight Whitaker's battle to cap his addictions and budding relationships that if nurtured could save his life.
Zemeckis tops his own plane crash in Cast Away with the heart-pounding tailspin sequence (if you've ever been scared of flying before Flight will push into phobia territory). In the few scenes after the literal destruction Washington is able to convey an equal amount of power in the moments of mental destruction. Whitaker is obviously crushed by the events the bottle silently calling for him in every down moment. Flight strives for that level of introspection throughout eventually pairing Washington with equally distraught junkie Nicole (Kelly Reilly). Their relationship is barely fleshed out with the script time and time again resorting to obvious over-the-top depictions of substance abuse (a la Nic Cage's Leaving Las Vegas) and the bickering that follows. Washington's Whitaker hits is lowest point early sitting there until the climax of the film.
Sharing screentime with the intimate tale is the surprisingly comical attempt by the pilot's airline union buddy (Bruce Greenwood) and the company lawyer (Don Cheadle) to get Whitaker into shape. Prepping him for inquisitions looking into evidence from the wreckage and calling upon Whitaker's dealer Harling (John Goodman) to jump start their "hero" when the time is right the two men do everything they can to keep any blame being placed upon Whitaker by the National Transportation Safety Board investigators. The thread doesn't feel relevant to Whitaker's plight and in turn feels like unnecessary baggage that pads the runtime.
Everything in Fight shoots for the skies — and on purpose. The music is constantly swelling the photography glossy and unnatural and rarely do we breach Washington's wild exterior for a sense of what Whitaker's really grappling with. For Zemeckis Flight is still a spectacle film with Washington's ability to emote as the magical special effect. Instead of using it sparingly he once again goes big. Too big.
It's the biggest night in television. But will it be the most surprising one? Turns out, not quite. Though there were a few shockers during Sunday's 64th annual Emmy Awards — for instance, Homeland's Damian Lewis wins over Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston — ABC's Modern Family was, per usual, the belle of the ball with four Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy series. Other big winners of the evening? Showtime's Homeland — which also picked up four wins, including Outstanding Drama — HBO's Game Change — which won four awards, including Best Miniseries or Movie — and Louis C.K., who won Outstanding Writing for his FX darling Louie and Outstanding Writing in a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special for Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater.

Showtime President of Entertainment David Nevins took the TCA stage Monday afternoon in Beverly Hills to spill some desperately needed details on all your favorite shows. And because we love you oh-so much, Hollywood.com has gathered all the facts and put them into one giant Showtime mega-post! You’re welcome.
So what’s the status on Dexter? How many more seasons of Homeland can we expect to cherish? And will we see additional episodes of Californication and Inside Comedy? Check out all the updates below!
The Big C: The Showtime Exec revealed that Laura Linney and Co. are coming back for a fourth season, but it will also be the show’s last. You can check out all the details on the cancer themed drama’s final season here!
The Borgias: Showtime’s period drama is currently shooting their third season (set to premiere in 2013) and Nevins says a another season is very likely. He explains, “The original plan going in was four seasons.” However, Nevins clarified that just because the plan was four doesn’t mean the head honcho wont green-light a fifth.
Californication: How much longer can fans expect to see Californication on the air? Nevins admits, “I’m honestly not sure.” He says the upcoming season has a great combination of comedy and soulfulness, but he hasn't seen any cuts yet. Luckily, he won't make any decisions until the show has aired.
Dexter: The Showtime Prez confirmed that ending the cult-hit after two more seasons is "the likely scenario." Nevins reveals, "But plans can always change. Everything has gotten rewired this [coming season] given that Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) has to deal with who her brother is. Everything changes… Every scene is fraught because you’re wondering what is she going to do. What does he think she’s going to do." The seventh season of Dexter premiere Sunday, September 30 at 9 p.m.
Episodes: It would be shocking to not see this critically acclaimed hit return for a third season and apparently Nevins thinks so too. “We’re working on the details right now but I’m expecting Episodes to come back,” said Nevins. “I think that show is irregular as opposed to some of your other shows… [And] we tend to be a little slower to get them on the air, but my intention is to keep going.” Plus, Matt LeBlanc exclusively told us that a mini Friends reunion is all set on an upcoming episode.
Homeland: After boasting to the room that Homeland won a Golden Globe for Best Drama, nine Emmy nominations and a Peabody, Nevins says that the future of the freshman mega-hit is a “wide blue sky.” Although he expects the show to last for many seasons, Nevins warns that does not mean that the core cast will last just as long. “Anybody can go at anytime,” said Nevins. "They’ve made some very bold choices this year." The second season of Homeland premiere Sunday, September 30 at 10 p.m.
House of Lies: Like Homeland, Nevins is expecting this raunchy comedy to become one of the network’s new flagship shows. He says the network is expecting the first-year hit to be “big” in 2013.
Inside Comedy: It’s back and better than ever! David Steinberg and Steve Carell’s comedy documentary is returning this fall with ten all-new episodes. Fans can expect to see comedy legends such as Ben Stiller, Tina Fey, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and Albert Brooks.
Nurse Jackie: Nevins didn’t really mention anything about Edie Falco or the rest of her amazing ensemble, but he did however praise the dramedy’s “great benefits” of changing things up and not avoiding consequences. "You better not fall into predictable patterns. As soon as you get predictable, you get boring."
Shameless: The dramedy with America’s favorite dysfunctional family is currently filming their third season — episode four, to be exact. Stay tuned, because Hollywood.com has tons of exclusive Season 3 scoop from Emmy Rossum (Fiona), Shanola Hampton (Veronica) and Cameron Monaghan (Ian) coming soon. Here’s a little teaser: “Shameless season three is epic,” exclaimed Hampton at the CBS/CW/Showtime party Sunday night. “And we are not holding back at all!”
Weeds: Nevins admits that he has read the final episode of the long-time comedy but would not disclose any teasers. He admits with a smile, “[Creator] Jenji [Kohan] would kill me if I gave any details.” However the Showtime boss adds, "It was very carefully planned towards," and it “answers a lot of questions.” Nevins also said he would “love it” if Mary-Lousie Parker would return to Showtime as either an actor or a producer. Steve Carell, where will your post-Office days take you? Will you mount heavy dramas and artsy biopics? Maybe get behind the camera and shoot a documentary about impoverished Aborigines? Or will showbiz altogether leave you... after all, there are mountains to climb, oceans to explore, depths of the earth to this day undiscovered by man... oh, you're staying in TV? Yeah, that's good. We're all comfortable with that.
Carell will be executive producing a new series, Laughing Stock, for Showtime. The show will feature thirty-minute interviews with great contributors to comedy of this and past generations. Included thus far are Judd Apatow, Mel Brooks, Larry David, Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey, Carl Reiner and Jerry Seinfeld. The interviewers will be conducted by David Steinberg, who will also play executive producer beside Carell.
The series will premiere on Showtime early in 2012.

On the hit television show The Secret Life of the American Teenager protagonist Amy Juergens has to deal with high school drama boy troubles the needs of her young child and more making her days at Ulysses S. Grant High School far from ideal. In reality the lives of youngsters are even more complicated as all of the above in addition to peer pressure academic competition and the age-old quest to be cool can overwhelm the most focused individual.
Writers-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson) both dramatize and make light of the plight of pubescents in their sweet new film It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Based on Ned Vizzini’s novel which chronicles a lonesome teen’s brief stay at an adult psychiatric ward it is a very funny story but the filmmakers keep it levelheaded with melancholy supporting characters and a message about the affliction of our society’s medicated youth.
Keir Gilchrist (The United States of Tara) plays Craig a chronically depressed Brooklyn teen who checks in for treatment after contemplating suicide. An over-achiever caught up in the rat race that is the American Dream Craig’s pessimism and depression stem from neglectful parents more concerned with him gaining acceptance into an elite school than following his passions. His anxiety is aggravated by the dreadful current events of our time notably the wars and financial meltdown that have crippled the aspirations of much of our country’s youth. Though he is a bit over-dramatic Craig’s ailment does raise notable points about paternal priorities and an entire generation of disheartened dreamers.
But surrounded by the hospital’s eccentric group of patients including Emma Roberts’ damaged love interest Noelle and Zach Galifianakis’ emotionally guarded Bobby Craig makes a psychological breakthrough. Gilchrist is like the love child of Justin Long and Jay Baruchel but isn’t nearly as fun to watch as either of those hot-at-the-moment performers save for one Flight of the Conchords moment in the middle of the movie. It’s not that he’s unconvincing; he’s just dull. Luckily Galifianakis steals the show at every turn giving his first ever three-dimensional performance and earning all the attention he’s been getting lately.
Had its story been laid out ordinarily It’s Kind of a Funny Story wouldn’t have been nearly as affecting as it is. But a series of funky flashbacks quirky cut-scenes and animated sequences make the film’s otherwise predictable narrative abstract original and refreshing.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT?
The uber-anticipated sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen picks up shortly after the events of the blockbuster first film. With evil Megatron’s carcass buried at the bottom of the ocean Optimus Prime and his Autobot comrades working together with an elite group of human soldiers are now focused on hunting the remaining Decepticons scattered across the globe. Sam Witwicky hero of the 2007 movie is busy preparing for his first year at college while his unlikely girlfriend Mikaela Barnes stays behind to tend to her father’s auto-repair shop. Little do they know however that back on Cybertron a Decepticon elder known as “The Fallen” is hatching a scheme to invade Earth where hidden somewhere on the planet is the last known source of energon the life-blood of all Transformers. If he succeeds the devastation left in his wake will no doubt spell the end of the human race. With the fate of Earth hanging in the balance Sam and Mikaela must once again have to team up with Optimus and the Autobots to defeat this powerful new foe.
WHO’S IN IT?
All the major human players from the first Transformers film are back for the sequel including Shia LaBeouf Megan Fox Tyrese Gibson Josh Duhamel and John Turturro. Newcomers include Ramon Rodriguez who plays Sam’s conspiracy-obsessed college roommate Leo and The Office’s Rainn Wilson who enjoys a notable cameo as a pompous physics professor.
Of course the actors merely serve as background filler for the real stars of the show: those titular talking-alien robots. And director Michael Bay fills up the screen with enough mechanical eye candy to dazzle even the most skeptical gearhead. Returning characters include Optimus Prime Bumblebee Ratchet Ironhide Barricade Jazz (don’t act surprised) Starscream Frenzy and Megatron (again don’t act surprised).
Several new Autobots are introduced to the mix: Mudflap and Skids a pair of jive-talking ceaselessly annoying hatchbacks; Jolt a Chevy Volt; Sideswipe a silver Corvette; and Jetfire an elderly Decepticon turncoat who walks with a cane speaks with an English accent and transforms into an SR-71 Blackbird. Additions to Decepticon side include: The Fallen who we learn is the Decepticons’ real head honcho (consider him the Emperor Palpatine to Megatron’s Darth Vader); Soundwave a communications specialist who sinks his tentacles into a satellite and spies on us from above; Ravage a panther-like creature; Wheelie a radio-controlled truck who talks like Joe Pesci; “the Doctor ” a sort of mad scientist who speaks with a German accent (naturally); and the Constructicons a group of construction vehicles that fuse together to form a massive four-legged beast.
No director does over-the-top explosion-laded action better than Michael Bay and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen features several staggering set pieces. The CGI work on this film makes the last one look like it was designed on a Commodore 64.
Any scene in which people talk — and several of the ones in which robots talk too. Just as the action and visual effects are beefed up for the sequel the bad jokes and cringe-worthy dialogue are as well. Highlights include two dogs humping John Turturro in a thong a robot humping Megan Fox’s leg a sequence involving Sam’s stoned mom and a glimpse of a very large pair of testicles on one very large Decepticon. The latter will likely go down as the “nipples-on-the-Batsuit” moment for the Transformers franchise.
The show-stopping climax set in the Egyptian desert is one extended riotous battle royale packed with so much robot-on-robot action you’ll feel overwhelmed at times.
NETFLIX OR MULTIPLEX?
This big-budget spectacle begs to be seen at the multiplex — IMAX if possible. Just bring a pair of earplugs for the dialogue sequences. You might want to bring some Dramamine as well as Mr. Bay went a little overboard with his trademark circling-camera sequences this time around.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT?
Two childhood buddies are forever changed by their first encounter with Playboy magazine. The story picks up 10 years later focusing on Tucker Cleigh a sex-obsessed moron who beds every girl he meets plus his conservative friend Eugene Bell who practices abstinence with his uptight girlfriend Cindi and joins her in teaching its virtues to younger students. But when Cindi decides she's ready to "do it" on prom night Eugene nervously complies but gets drunk falls down a flight of stairs and lands in a four-year coma. When he awakens he discovers Cindi has become a nude Playboy centerfold and joins Tucker on a chaotic cross-country trip to get to the Playboy mansion where he hopes to find Cindi — and Tucker gets to live out his wildest playmate fantasies.
WHO'S IN IT?
Miss March exists as a comic vehicle for its "stars " Zach Cregger and Trevor Moore members of a Brooklyn comedy group whose TV show The Whitest Kids U Know ran for several seasons on IFC. The team also co-directs and writes this witless hodgepodge of gross-out gags attempting to find humor in tasteless — not to mention sexist — setups. It makes last summer's The House Bunny look like Citizen Kane by comparison. Moore seems to be channeling early Jim Carrey as he plays a sex-crazed idiot who spends most of the movie trying to help his best friend (played by Cregger) lose his virginity despite an endless array of inanely conceived psychological and medical obstacles. With no one to rein them in these writer/director/stars overplay to the extreme and go for the cheapest laughs imaginable. Trying to mine physical humor out of situations dealing from epileptic sex to uncontrolled bowels this team throws it all at the wall but not much sticks. The rest of the cast including Raquel Alessi Molly Stanton 2007 Playmate of the Year Sara Jean Underwood and Craig Robinson — as an expletive-hurtling rapper named Horsedick.MPEG (in a gag repeated at least ten times) — are left twisting in the wind. Robinson however does get mileage out of a triple-X hardcore rap parody.
A scene where Eugene and Cindi try to teach sexual abstinence to a sparse audience of inattentive undergrads is amusing and well played. Unfortunately it occurs in the first 10 minutes. After that you're on your own.
Just about everything else including a dopey subplot involving a group of revenge-seeking firemen desperate stunt-laden gags egregiously over-the-top product placement for Playboy and one embarrassing scene after another designed to get the hardest R-rating possible.
MOST MEMORABLE LINE
Eighty-two-year-old Playboy founder Hugh Hefner gets to offer this bon mot in his one-scene cameo: "There's a bunny deep down inside every woman and if you see that bunny you're on to something."
GO OUT AND GET POPCORN WHEN …
The opening credits start. Then sneak into a better movie instead.
