Documentary about the quest for jewels, gold and other treasure. Utilizes original and archival stills and footage, contemporary letters and newspaper accounts, re-enactments and accounts from adverturers, scientists and historians.
Part 1 takes a critical look at the supposed curse of the Hope Diamond, and travels to the badlands of Arizona in search of a gold mine that was cursed by the Apache three centuries ago. The program also uncovers a treasure trove that, according to Mayan legend, was taken from the very jaws of hell, and travels to Egypt and Iran to examine curses in the ancient world used to guard treasures of the dead.
Part 2 examines treasures that people believe connect them to their gods. The program looks at four of Christianity's most prized treasures -- the Copper Scroll, the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail and the Shroud of Turin.
Part 3 looks at royal adornment, from an Indian child-Maharajah and the greatest of his jewels, to a Chinese Empress and her jades, from an Emperor who treasured bronze, to South American rulers who valued cloth above gold.
