Actor Ansel Elgort has reportedly split from his longtime girlfriend Violetta Komyshan. The Fault in Our Stars heart-throb and his high school sweetheart have parted ways, according to Us Weekly.
An insider tells the publication that Elgort's busy schedule ultimately led to their demise, saying, "They tried to navigate his commitments, but between filming and press for the movies, it got difficult."
The source adds that their romance was "young love" and the split was amicable.
The actor, who has spent the past few months working on the sequel to Divergent, met Komyshan while they were attending the acclaimed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York.
Dancer Komyshan graduated earlier this year (14), in the same class as Madonna's daughter Lourdes.
Iggy Azalea turned down Rita Ora's plan to emulate Madonna's onstage kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards. The pop superstar caused controversy by giving the two singers a passionate smooch during their performance at the prizegiving in 2003, and Ora wanted to recreate the stunt with Azalea during their turn on stage at the 2014 ceremony on Sunday (24Aug14).
However, the Australian rapper rejected the singer's suggestion.
Ora tells Britain's The Sun newspaper, "I said to Iggy we should just make out on stage, kiss during our performance. She told me that would be crazy because it's already been done. Britney Spears and Madonna kissing was my favourite VMA performance ever."
The pair teamed up to perform their collaboration Black Widow at the show.
Once a year, we're treated to a cultural event unlike any other: the MTV Video Music Awards. Some of the moments from ceremonies past will live forever in our mind, from Chris Rock joking about Jennifer Lopez and her derrière's need for more than one limousine to Diana Ross jiggling Lil Kim's exposed breast. The show knows how to provoke controversy, and has thus remained a lightning rod for pop culture discussion since it began in 1984. This list isn't about the most controversial moments in the award show's history, but the most mesmerizing live performances it gave us (some of which, yes, surely did drum up some controversy).
1. Madonna - "Like A Virgin" 1984
Possibly one of the most iconic performances ever, period. Madonna's signature wedding dress and 'boy toy' belt are still synonymous with 80s pop culture, and it's all thanks to this performance. She rolls around on the floor quite suggestively, setting the tone for what we've come to expect from both the Queen of Pop and the VMAs.
2. Madonna - "Vogue" 1990
Madonna returned to the stage in 1990, decked out in Marie Antoinette-inspired clothing, and delivered this perfectly choreographed rendition of her classic "Vogue." Though completely covered as an 18th century aristocrat, Madge still managed to sexualize the performance by shoving faces into her bosom and lifting up her skirt to allow her backup dancers a peak beneath.
3. Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott - "Like A Virgin/Hollywood Medley" 2003
Now that's how you open an award show. Or is it? The downside of this majesty: it ended up being all anyone could talk about... for ten years. I don't think anything in VMAs history earned this must discussion until the dawn of Miley. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, at the time the two biggest pop stars around, having been so clearly influenced by Madonna, took to the stage to pay homage to her 1984 VMA performance only to be joined by the Queen herself. As everyone knows, eventually the Material Girl smooched both Spears and Aguilera (though for some reason, we mostly just focus on Britney Spears) before Missy Elliott came in and got everyone dancing away the shock.
4. Beyoncé - "Love On Top" 2011
NO. SHE. DIDN'T. This was a moment I'll never forget. Beyoncé came out, annihilated the song (which is an incredible feat in and of itself, spanning six key changes in one number), but then dropped the microphone and grabbed her budding baby bump to announce her pregnancy to the world. This performance still gives me chills, and when I think about it, I can't help but want to jump up and down like Kanye does at the end. It's just perfect.
5. Miley Cyrus & Robin Thicke (feat. 2 Chainz & Kendrick Lamar) - "We Can't Stop/Blurred Lines/Give It 2 U" 2013
The performance that everyone knows about... so much so that my grandfather just called me to ask how he can clear "Miley Cyrus twerk" from his YouTube history. In combination with her video for "Wrecking Ball," this performance made sure everyone would be talking about Miley Cyrus for months to come. It provoked discussions about sexuality, racial appropriation, and age differences. Not to mention, it helped destroy a marriage (thus leaving us to deal with a groveling Robin Thicke).
6. Diddy, Sting, Faith Evans, 112 - "I'll Be Missing You" 1997
A tribute to The Notorious B.I.G., this is an undeniably beautiful and meangingful song. Sting coming on stage to perform the sample of "Every Breath You Take" shows more than just artists collaborating to make wonderful music, but it demonstrates the music community coming together in remembrance of loved ones.
7. Beyoncé - "Ring the Alarm" 2006
Beyoncé is a goddess. We know. Beyoncé can do no wrong. We know. At the time of this performance though, Queen Bey was just beginning to prove just how much of a force to be reckoned with she was. I distinctly remember not being familiar with this song as she descended to the stage, but this performance sold me on it. The highlight isn't the amazing trench coat she twirls around in during the beginning of performance, but that unexpected hydraulicks-inspired dance routine that she does in the middle. Girl just slayed and slaaaayed.
8. Chris Brown & Rihanna - "Wall to Wall"/"Umbrella"/"Billie Jean"/"Kiss Kiss" Medley 2007
Let's go back to a time when saying "Chris Brown" and "Rihanna" in the same sentence didn't immediately present a problem and focus on this gem of a performance from 2007. The two were rising stars with some of the biggest songs of the year, joining forces on stage for a magical moment. Say what you will about Chris Brown, but he's the best dancer we've had around since Michael Jackson. As he table-top dances and leaps from table to table, even eventually paying tribute to MJ, we were reminded of just how good he is.
9. Lady Gaga - "Paparazzi" 2009
Ladies and gentleman, Lady Gaga has arrived. She gave the sort of performance we've come to expect from her: theatrical, filled with musical ability, bizarre, and shocking. Mostly in the way it ended, with Mother Monster hanging on stage and bleeding to "death." Um... this was truly a shocking moment, even for her.
10. Britney Spears - "I'm a Slave 4 U" 2001
What made this one memorable? For one thing, she beings the performance in a cage with a tiger. That's just the start. Then she gives us the sort of magnificent dance routine that we love so much we're willing to worship whatever she does now just in memory of a performance like this. Just as you're thinking it won't get any better, the python comes out and Britney shimmies around the stage with the albino snake around her shoulders. (Can you believe there is an entire generation of people who were only able to witness Britney performances like "Gimme More?" I shudder to think).
11. Britney Spears - "Satisfaction/Oops! I Did It Again" 2000
This performance is perfect (and by that, we mean that it's flawed in a variety of ways, but if you're looking for real singing or anything substantial, watch the Grammys and hope for the best). Watching it now, knowing that she's going to rip off that suit and hat and give us one of the best choreographed hair tosses ever recorded, we can't help but get excited. The nude body suit and that booty grab at the 2:00 mark really cemented her place as a sex icon (as if the subtle schoolgirl costume and red latex catsuit hadn't already).
12. Hole - "Violet" 1995
Courtney Love is nothing if not raw. She dedicated this performance to a slew of deceased musicians and loved ones, including husband Kurt Cobain and bandmate Kristen Pfaff, and proceeded to rock out in typical Courtney style and tried to destroy everything on the stage. This, of course, happened before she threw the contents of her purse at Madonna and struck up a conversation in the middle of an interview.
13. Eminem - "The Real Slim Shady" / "The Way I Am" 2000
Eminem made a statement in 2000 by proving that he was the real Slim Shady, marching through Radio City Music Hall with a sea of imitators. More impressively is how many times he grabs his crotch. You'd think he was in genuine fear of being assaulted or something.
14. Kid Rock (feat. Run-DMC, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Joe C.) - "King of Rock"/"Rock Box"/"Bawitdaba"/"Walk This Way" 1999
What's not to like about this performance? As much as I wish I didn't like Kid Rock, I have to give him his props. This performance was stellar, and is probably one of the only performances on this list that my brother enjoyed watching too (just kidding, we mentioned Britney Spears stripping into a nude bodysuit, right?).
15. Michael Jackson - Medley 1995
At a whopping fifteen minutes long, this performance is more of a Michael Jackson concert than a VMA performance. However, it's definitely one of the better ways to spend fifteen minutes, as this performance is jam-packed with everything you'd expect from a Michael Jackson performance. He is the King of Pop, after all.
Disney star Zendaya Coleman was inspired by Madonna for her look on the blue carpet for the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday (10Aug14). The actress/singer, who is the newest spokesperson for the pop diva's Material Girl fashion line, donned a fuchsia dress and short bob hairdo, which Coleman says is an "update version" of Madonna's memorable look from the 1984 music video for Material Girl. Coleman even took home the award for Candies' Choice Style Icon at the prizegiving.
Producer William Orbit has defended Britney Spears after critics savaged the pop star following the leak of a tuneless recording of her track Alien.
The Toxic superstar teamed up with Orbit, most famous for his work on Madonna's Ray of Light and Music albums, on the song for her 2013 album Britney Jean. The track came back to haunt Spears this week (beg07Jul14) when a raw clip of the song appeared online, prompting fans to take to social media to mock the singer's out-of-tune vocals.
Orbit has now spoken out in her defence, insisting the singer was warming up to help studio engineers prepare their equipment. In a post on Facebook.com, he writes, "Dearest Music Lovers, I have heard that Britney vocal link that everybody's been discussing. It has been impossible not to as there have been many comments directing my attention to it... I'd like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalisations in order to get warmed up."
"Warming up is essential if you're a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly. I've heard all manner of sounds emitted during warm-ups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners."
"A generous singer will put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. It's not expected to be a 'take'."
The producer went on to slam the culprit behind the leak, adding, "Whomever put this on the Internet must have done so in a spirit of unkindness, but it can in no way detract from the fact that Britney is and always will be beyond stellar! She is magnificent! And that's that."
Pop superstar Madonna is giving back to the residents of her native Detroit, Michigan by funding three charitable projects for disadvantaged children and homeless women in the bankrupt city. The Material Girl hitmaker will help to build the Downtown Youth Boxing Gym, which will hold free after-school boxing and educational mentoring programmes for children, and will cover the costs of art, music and other equipment, including iPods and iPads, for students at the Detroit Achievement Academy.
The singer is also donating money to bosses at non-profit organisation The Empowerment Plan, which employs displaced women to make clothes and accessories for the homeless.
The exact amount Madonna plans to spend on the causes has not been revealed, but she admitted she had been motivated to act following a recent trip home.
In a statement released on Monday (30Jun14), she wrote, "I was deeply inspired by the efforts of so many people who I met who have dedicated themselves to helping the kids and adults in Detroit elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty...
"It was obvious to me that I had to get involved and be part of the solution to help Detroit recover. A piece of my heart will always be in Detroit, and I'm humbled to be able to give back to my community."
Detroit city officials declared bankruptcy in July, 2013 with debts of at least $18 billion, making it the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.
News of Madonna's generosity emerge days after it was revealed her daughter Lourdes would be enrolling in her alma mater, the University of Michigan, this autumn (14).
Eminem's daughter has graduated with honours from her Michigan high school. Hailie Jade Scott Mathers was rewarded for her hard work and good grades at Chippewa Valley High School in Clinton Township on 8 June (14).
The teen was handed an Academic Excellence Award, a Department of Psychology Award and she also graduated Summa Cum Laude for maintaining a high grade point average.
Hailie, who was the high school's homecoming queen last year (13), will be attending Michigan State University in the autumn (14).
She is not the only famous offspring to start college in Michigan later this year (14) - another Madonna's daughter Lourdes will be attending her mother's alma mater, the University of Michigan, after graduating from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York on Wednesday (25Jun14).
Madonna's daughter Lourdes has enrolled at her mother's alma mater, the University of Michigan.
The 17 year old is registered as a student in the undergraduate music, dance, and theatre program, and will eventually receive a bachelor's degree in fine arts in musical theatre. She will follow in the footsteps of her mother, who attended the university on a dance scholarship in the 1970s.
Madonna never completed her degree because she left to pursue her performing dreams in New York. Lourdes will begin her course in the autumn (14).
Actress Jennifer Lawrence embarrassed herself at Madonna's Oscars afterparty earlier this year (14) after throwing up in front of Miley Cyrus. The Hunger Games star and her best friend Laura headed to the annual bash thrown by Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary at the music guru's California mansion to continue partying after the Academy Awards, but her night didn't end up quite how she had imagined.
In a pre-taped interview with talk show host Seth Meyers, which aired in America on Wednesday night (21May14), she said, "I've never gone out after Golden Globes or Oscars or anything. I'm just so sick of people by that point. I'm like, 'Ugh, God!' But this time I was like, 'I'm going out'. And I puked all over."
Discussing the incident at Oseary's house, she explains, "If you get invited you're, like, super important. And I puked on his porch. I was in such bad condition and I look behind me while I'm puking and Miley Cyrus is there, (looking) like, 'Get it together.'"
British pop star Rita Ora has signed on as the new face of luxury Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli. The R.I.P. hitmaker, who has previously fronted ad campaigns for DKNY and Madonna's Material Girl line, has been teasing fans about an upcoming "surprise" with her recent Instagram.com snaps, including one photo of herself with the top designer's wife and business partner, Eva Cavalli, in New York.
Soul singer Maxwell, who took the pictures on Saturday (26Apr14), confirmed the news by uploading his own image of Ora and Eva Cavalli, alongside the message, "congratulations @eva_cavalli and (photographer) @francescocarrozzini for the amazing @ritaora cavalli f/w (fall/winter) campaign #cavallifriends".
The group later celebrated the new collaboration with dinner at Omar's restaurant in Manhattan's West Village, where they were joined by rap mogul Russell Simmons.
The Cavalli deal comes shortly after Ora wore a sheer black dress from the label for a recent performance at the Coachella music festival in California. It is the singer's latest venture into the fashion world - she is also due to launch her first range with sports brand Adidas Originals, and recently unveiled her capsule collection for British cosmetics firm Rimmel.
Music special featuring the VH1 premiere of Madonna's video "Music" and a live, phone interview with Madonna. The program also includes video interviews with actress Debi Mazar and Madonna's longtime background vocalist and touring partner Nikki Harris.
